Panic attack after 1st dress fitting!!!

I am seriously freaking out - I just had my first fitting and the dress doesn't fit. It's too small.  I've been in tears all afternoon :(

I bought the dress at a bridal show, and from what the lady at the alterations place said, when I tried it on, we didn't have it sitting properly on my ribcage, so we could zip it up then. She moved it to where it was supposed to be and now it won't zip.  Because of the way the beading, ribbons and etc are, she can't just add more material or take the seams out.

She said she is going to have to cut off half the zipper and make the remainder of the back a tie-up so that it can be adjusted to my size. Whether I gain weight or lose weight, she said the tie-up back will be able to be adjusted.

I'm just totally feeling like a big fat cow right now and completely worried that the dress isn't going to look the same or I won't like it with the tie-up back. Even though that's pretty much my only option.

*sigh*

  • Don't worry!  I think corset backs look gorgeous!  It sounds like your seamstress has a handle on things so wait to see what the dress actually looks like with the alterations before you go crazy.  I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised.  Just remind youself of why you feel in love with the dress in the first place!

Oh, and you are NOT a cow!!

  • I'm a street size 4 petite and tried on a dress being sold off the rack that didn't zip up the back and they would have had to make it a corset for me, so no way does it make you a cow :-)  I'm sure your seamstress will work her magic and everything will look great if you trust in whatever she recommends to get the best fit.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • Look at it this way your dress will be one of a kind
  • Ohhh, don't worry about this!! The tie up backs look GORGEOUS, I bet you anything it will be for the best. Please post pictures once you get your dress back from the tailor.
  • I'm sorry you are going through this, but the corsets do look amazing. I'm opting to have a corset added to mine. I had to order the dress a size bigger than my size anyway because it was discontinued. Now that I've started Zumba, drinking more water, and watching what I eat, I was afraid I'd lose too much weight and they wouldn't be able to alter it down. My seamstress says that corset allow for adjustments. So whether you lose the weight or not, you'll look great in it. (PS. You aren't a "fat cow". Take some deep breaths. You'll be ok."

  • I was one of those people that waited too long to order their dress By the time I got around to ordering it, it was too late and I had to buy the sample.  Well I am not exactly a petite person so the sample is way too small.  It would only zip a couple of inches up.  The seamstress offered the corseet back solution.

At first I was completely devastated that I had to change the back of the dress.  But when I thought about it, I realized that I would rather have that dress with a corset back than any other dress.  I love that dress and if the only way I could have it was to change the back then that's what I would do.

Don't be too discouraged.  She assured me that it would not completely change the look of the back of the dress.

  • Aww don't be upset. IMO corset backs are way more pretty than zipper backs. And like PP said, your dress will be one of a kind.

  • Thanks everyone! My mom kept telling me the same thing - it's gonna be beautiful, she will make it fit... but it's my dress and all I can see is that it's too small and now it has to be changed from the original :(

So I'm working on making myself think it's all gonna be alright :)

My dress has a corset back and I wouldn't have it any other way!
