Agreed to have corset back added... scared now?

My dress came in on Friday and I went to pick it up and try it on in the first time in my size.  It was all good but there was about 3 inches that wouldnt zipper.  I have a broad back I guess.  It fit wonderfully everywhere else though.  The seamstress came out and said a "corset back will look great lets do that!"  I love the look of them but I'm afraid the dress will get ruined - what if she messes up??  The upper part of the dress is very structured, hardly any give so it will definitely give me some flexibility and breathing room.  The back right now is just a standard zipper with covered buttons.  I know people do this a lot but I'm wondering if it can turn out badly??    My dress is Alfred Angelo 2100..

  • I can understand why you're concerned but I'm sure this is something the seamstress wouldn't have suggested if it wouldn't work well, and that she's done it many, many times and won't mess it up!  And if for some reason the alterations are not to your satisfaction then it will be upon her to make it right.  But especially if you like the look of a corset back, chances are you'll be happy with it.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.

<div>It sounds to me like they screwed up and ordered you the wrong size, and now they're trying to cover their mistake by suggesting YOU pay for a corset.  When they order you a dress, it's supposed to FIT, not be so small that 3 inches don't zip.</div><div>
</div><div>Only agree to the corset back if YOU want the corset back, but don't get screwed into paying for alterations that wouldn't have been necessary otherwise.</div>
  • If it isn't what you want, tell them now before they do anything to your gown.  Make sure they ordered it in the correct size.  If they measured you correctly they would have known that they needed to order it in the next bigger size so it zipped all the way up.  Then they would have only needed to do the basic alterations to take it in a little so it fit properly everywhere else.

To me it sounds like they ordered the wrong size and don't want to go through all the mess of telling you that, and having to order a new one.  Do what you want to your dress, it is what you will be wearing, not them.
  • I'm sure it's going to turn out great. That's a beautiful dress BTW- my sorority little sister will be wearing it to her May wedding.

  • I wouldnt be scared. As PP's said check the size is correct.

I am having a corset back put into my dress as well, but I am waiting until 2 months before. That way I can see if it needs to be taken in as well before the corset back.

If you don't want a corset back, go to a very experience seamstress and she will be able to create more on the dress so that it zippers.

My streamstress in SNJ is wonderful and I trust her. She is one of kind but I am sure there are more of her!

  • Oh I should have mentioned - I don't have the fitting appointment until the end of May.... they aren't doing it now.  The size is correct, I'm just weirdly shaped... It fit perfectly in the hips and waist... just at the broadest part of my back is where I had problem... thanks for all the advice.. I do love the corset backs I just didn't think it was an option since I bought a dress without one.  Thanks everyone! :)

The way this dress is structured wasn't like any of the others I tried on, most had a little "give" to it - this one because of the neckline I think is very structured with boning on the sides.
