XP: Time to get pictures back

We're about to sign a contract with a photog but it concerns me that in her contract it says we will get our digital files by 90 days after the event. That seems like an really long time. I asked her about it and she said it "usually" doesn't take that long but because of other weddings/sessions/etc, that is a realistic time frame and since it's in the contract that way she HAS TO get them to us by 90 days after. Our second choice photographer said she usually has them ready 2 weeks after and she is way more booked than #1. Is 90 days a normal time frame? I can be patient for quality photos, but 90 days seems like overkill.

Re: XP: Time to get pictures back

  • We had preview shots (about 20 or so) on our photographer's blog in about a week.  All 650 or so were on her website for print or digital order in about 3 weeks, and we're still waiting for our album and CDROM at 4 months.   I think 90 days sounds normal.

  • It took about 12 weeks to get our disc from our photog.  Our contract stated 8-10, but we signed that a year in advance and she wound up traveling quite a bit for other weddings after shooting ours, so I was understanding.  We also ended up with about 900 edited images from our day - a time consuming process.

The other photographers we met with all had similar processing timeframes.

I'd be concerned about the quality of what I was getting if a photographer only needed 2 weeks to turn around an entire day's worth of shooting.
  • It really depends, I think mine was 30 days, but I had a preview of 10 or so within a couple weeks.

Another thing to consider is the amount of processing the photog does. Are they heavy-handed with Photoshop? If so, that could be the reasoning for the extra time. It's also possible that she just likes to give herself as much time as possible just in case something comes up, but she knows you'll have them much sooner (sounds like this is the case).

If you really love the 90 day photographer, I would still go with her and not let the timing affect your decision. If her and the other photographer are otherwise equal as far as how you feel about their style of shots, price, etc. then go with the one who claims to be quicker.

  • It depends on the photographer. If they have a lot of editing staff, then 90 days seems like a lot to me, but if it's a small company or a one person organization than 90 days is not unrealistic.

  • I think my main concern is that we are paying extra for the high resolution files because we want to be able to print our own photos instead of paying the ridiculous print charges that photogs have. I'm just wondering if she has that 90 days thing hoping that we'll get impatient and buy photos from her before she gives us the cd! If that is the case, it annoys me!

  • We got a 200 picture preview 3 days after the wedding, but our contract states all about 10 weeks after the wedding. She does them all herself, and I don't mind waiting.
When I got my bridals done, I needed to order my canvas ASAP even though my disc wasn't in. She had them loaded on a picture sharing website (low-res), so I chose one and then asked her for the high-res file so I could order it.
If you need a couple high res for a specific reason she may work with you to get what you need.
  • I've never heard of a photographer letting you see the photos but refusing to send the CD if they're all done. Usually the time frame means it will take that long to get the photos edited for you (either in photoshop or just deleting the doubles, which ever).

We're about 65 days out and still don't have our photos (except for one preview) and it's driving me a bit crazy- but my photographer is amazing and I think it's worth the wait.
  • It took us 10 weeks to get a single photo back.
