Getting in Shape

No cardio, all weights/toning?

What do you think about doing no cardio and just doing weights for toning? I have about 15 pounds to lose but I'd be happy with looking more toned if nothing else. The reason I ask is because I have SEVERE eczema. It flairs up extremely bad every time I sweat, which is almost everyday, so it never goes away. I am so sick of this, I just can't deal with it anymore. I went to the doctor Saturday and there pretty much isn't anything I can do, just use my steroid creams. It doesn't really help. So, do you think it will make much of a difference if I just do toning exercise instead of cardio? I may just have to deal with it, but this is getting so bad it's scaring my skin. TIA.

Re: No cardio, all weights/toning?

  • I would give it a shot for a couple of weeks and see how you do with it.  You might have to lower your calories a little bit to keep losing weight, but I think it's definitely worth a try.

As far as your eczema, I have a friend with really bad eczema and when she goes tanning it gets a lot better.  I'm personally not one to encourage anyone to go tanning because of all of the skin cancer risks, but I thought I would tell you so you could make your own informed decision with your doctor if you want to explore that option.  Otherwise, I really hope your steroid creams work!
  • I dont know what kinda weights your doing girl, but I sweat quite a lot when I do weights. If you are going to do only strength training I would do the heaviest you can, like max out at that weight (struggle with the last couple of reps). I generally only do 30 minutes of cardio when I do weights, but sometimes less, and theres been a noticable difference in my body.
  • I think it's definitely worth a shot; like Nebb said, strength routines can actually make you sweat and get your heart pumping just as much as a cardio routine can, but it's still worth trying.

  • Well, I do sweat when I do weights, but it's not nearly as much as cardio. I think I'll give it a shot. Thanks!

As for tanning, my doctor recommended sun when I can, and if I can't, to go tanning. I haven't done it yet, but I guess I could give it a shot. I think about five minutes three times a week. Sounds so pointless, but maybe it will help!

  • Just an FYI, my brother also has really bad eczema and he finds that the Aveno moisturizers help for the times when you don't want to use the steroid creams.

I'm sure the dry winter months don't help at all. Frown

  • Can you do cardio that doesn't make you sweat?  Like go for long walks at a normal pace?  I know it would take more time and you wouldn't burn as many calories as a higher intensity workout, but at least it is something.

I always sweat if I'm doing the right kind of weights workout although it is not as much of a sweat as with cardio.

Or would you be willing to consider a really strict diet plan between now and the wedding with strictly lean protein, whole grains, minimal good fats (nuts, etc) and vegetables?  That might help too as long as you eat enough to get your needed calories for the day.

  • I would definitely try to follow a more strict diet if you're not already and keep mixing cardio and weights. Cardio is really where you burn the calories.  If you were just looking to maintain I'd say go ahead with weights and lighter cardio (walking etc), but if you are still looking to lose 15 pounds, I think you have to keep up with some heavy cardio.  Maybe do heavy cardio 3 days a week, and weights 3.  And on weights days, walk for 30 minutes or on your break at work, climb the stairs a few times.  I have terrible dry skin in the winter, so I can't even imagine how uncomfortable you are with the eczema.

  • Have you tried swimming? It's great cardio!

As for weights, sure it'll help, and sure it's better than nothing... but if you aren't sweating very much while lifting, then you aren't doing it right!

I'm sorry you have this issue, it must be very frustrating :(
  • Have you heard of Wellness with Rose?

I got an email a long time ago about Eczema and she talks about how she cured it thru healthy eating.

  • Something that I've been doing is called gravity training. I purchased a "total gym" and it uses your own body weight for resistance. Seems to be working for the most part as both cardio and strength. Not sure if you wanted to buy a piece of equipment or not. (I got mine from wal-mart but I've also seen them at k-mart and target)

    Best of luck to you!
