Wedding Ceremony & Reception Music Discussions

Ipod reception - speakers and equipment? Who's watching over the music?

We're planning to do an ipod reception, since it will be early afternoon and there will be no dancing, so the music will just be jazz/swing type music. For those of you who have done this, what did you do for sound equipment? Borrow speakers from someone? Rent them from somewhere? What about a microphone? As I write this I'm wondering if my venue has something they use for conferences and things.

Because we're not dancing, I haven't been planning to have anyone watching over the laptop/ipod, except that my dad (techie) will be on hand in case it stops playing for some reason. We're not using the bar in the room, so I'm thinking if I hide the laptop behind the bar, we shouldn't have issues with anyone touching it. The guest list is also pretty small - only 65 people, and all of our friends will be coming to a more lively drinking event that evening, so I don't think anyone will feel the urge to mess with it. Do you think I should have someone watching it more closely?

We are planning to do something similar.  There is a local music store that rents speakers & microphones, we will be renting from them.  For a fee they will deliver and set it up or we can do it ourselves.  It's pretty cheap, about $150.

For other functions (work parties, Hallowe'en etc.) in the past I've used a friend's speakers that are portable but strong enough for a party room, so if you wanted to save money or know someone who has them then that is a good option too.  Our friend doesn't have a microphone though and I didn't want to go 2 places so I won't be borrowing his speakers.

I wouldn't worry about someone messing with the iPod.  If there isn't much dancing or drinking, people should be behaving.  Just try to keep it out of sight (hide it on top of a speaker or under a floral arrangement or something) to reduce the chance.  I'm sure it'll be fine.

My sister had a backyard wedding and we just hooked up small basic speakers outside and I was actually in charge of changing the music for the ceremony and getting the individual dance music set up.
I am planning on creating an extra long playlist on my laptop and using the venue's sound system and mic, we're not dancers either. For specific songs we will probably have a family member or friend be in charge of playing the specific songs but other than that we'll just let it run. I would suggest looking up rental places to see if any of them have speakers and mics to rent OR talk to your venue and see if they have any suggestions.

Some DJs offer Ipod packages.  Basically they give you access to a whole library of songs (which is nice because they will have tens of thousands of songs to choose from).  They also give you the speakers and microphone.  Then you make your playlist from their library of songs and press play when you are ready to start partying.  These packages are cheaper than actually hiring a DJ (or multiple DJs).
