Maine Honeymoon--What to do/where to stay/etc.

Hello,

My FI and I are planning on going to Portland and/or Bar Harbor Maine in mid-May next year for our honeymoon, and I was hoping to get some suggestions from people who have been before.  I went to Bar Harbor once when I was younger, but I don't remember a whole lot of specifics.  What were your favorite things you did, where did you stay, where did you eat, etc.

Thanks for the help!

  • Hi! I took my mom to this place for a long weekend last year... It was gorgeous. We didn't do anything special as she just wanted to see the coastline. But I loved our hotel and got a great deal on ruelala.com. http://www.innbythesea.com/ Good luck!

  • I'm from Maine and I'd actually suggest maybe Camden or Rockland instead because Bar Harbor in the summer time can be very busy, so maybe split the time? The weather can be day to day, so layers will be key. If you're in Portland, check out the Old Port so fun dinner and drinks :)

  • Maine is so pretty!  We spent a week there for a friend's wedding 2 years ago and I want to go back!

Acadia National Park is definitely worth a day or two.  We spent days hiking there and could have kept going.  The views are unbelievable.  We would hike in the AM and then picnic on the beach.

Portland and the other coastal towns were amazing!  We ate lobster rolls everywhere, FI became obsessed with them.  :)  In Portland my favorite night was taking the last night ferry loop to the islands and back.  It's basically like taking the bus for locals, but we stashed a bottle of wine and 2 paper cups in my purse, and had a romantic moonlight cruise.  It was awesome!

Kittery, Maine and Portsmouth NH are great towns as well.  We ate at Warren's lobster house in Kittery at a local friend's rec and it was amazing.  I wish we had more time in Portsmouth.

    Have fun!
  • I've been to Maine many many times, but never as a romantic trip. It's always been a family trip, so I don't know how much help I'll be, but here goes.

We've stayed in Bar Harbor amost a dozen times. There are many beautiful bed & breakfasts there, or you can do a hotel such as the Bar Harbor Inn. I enjoy nature, so we spent many days hiking in Acadia National Park and kayaking in the harbor. Whale watching is fun also. West Street Cafe has great little sandwiches to take on your hikes. The Jordan Pond House in the park is nice, but over priced. The Chartroom Restaurant is great for dinner. Jordan's Restaurant has the BEST breakfast I've ever had. Their blueberry pancakes & muffins are insane. There is always a line.

Boothbay Harbor, ME is also a beautiful little town. It was less touristy than Bar Harbor, but still had plenty to do. The Moosehead Lake region is also very nice. That's in the NW part of Maine, but it is so pretty. There are many hotels right on the lake. Hope that helps!

Warren's used to be a lot better, before it became touristy. My family had been going there for close to 10 years and couldn't believe the difference in quality once the tour companies found it.
