Getting in Shape

Do 2-A-Days work for you?

I'm getting really close to the wedding and would like to be in the best shape possible for the wedding without injuring myself, starving myself, or generally going crazy over it.  I'm wondering, has anyone had success (or failure) with 2 workouts per day?  I would do an hour of elliptical in the morning and then either strength training or more cardio depending on the day in the afternoon for 30-60 min.  Am I at serious risk of overdoing it?

  • If you're doing an hour of cardio in the morning, I would just stick with weights in the evening. You don't need to do more than 60 minutes a day or you might get injured or more likely burn yourself out.

I was doing 2 a days for a while last fall... and I ended up with an injury. I would seriously suggest you be careful. You dont NEED to work out multiple times a day, just make sure you make the most of your work outs - rather than doing 1 hr at a steady pace, why not do half an hour of high intensity intervals and then half an hour of heavy weights. You will get more out of that.

<div>This, times a bazillion. And if you hit a plateau, change up your interval intensity rather than just adding more time.</div>

I agree with Nebb and number55, you're probably better off increasing your intensity than your duration.

  • I can try upping my intensity again, I had heard that working out multiple times was supposed to help boost metabolism or something.  I honestly really like my hour elliptical because it's taken the place of my long runs where I can just think and destress.  I don't get the same level of stress relief when there's something I have to pay attention to (ie form with weights or intensity with intervals).  That's why I thought adding a second work out would work for me.

  • They work for me! My dress is a bit tight, so it looks like they may be in my future as well.Wink Just be sure to give yourself a break now and again. If not, you will burn out or get hurt. Good luck and try to find things you enjoy. If you are spending that much time, it is nice to like what you are doing!Smile
