Hi Michigan Knotties!

Im a MOH in a wedding and we are thinking about going away for the weekend for the bachlorette party. We are live in the Chicago area, and dont really know MI. Do any of you know any good weekend away places we can go? its in March so beach area dont really matter, just looking for more of a place we can rent a cottage or a house since there are so many of us.

Any suggestions would be great!

Re: Hi Michigan Knotties!

  • What part of Michigan do you want to go to? What are you looking at doing for your party? Do you want to stay in? Do you want to go out? Please give us some more information so we can help.

  • I like downtown Grand Rapids.  It is a clean city, good bars, good prices. Also, it would only be a 3-4 hour drive or train ride for you.

  • Traverse City would be great if you girls wanted to do some wine tastings!

  • Hi Brandy!
We were thinking close to Chicago, no more then a 2 hour drive since some of us have kids. We do want to go out one night (to a bar) if not both. Thinking a place that has bars, dinner spots etc near each other.

    Thanks!
  • I don't much about the west coast of Michigan... Bt I agree with Allycat, Grand Rapids is such a great time. The Bob is amazing. I love going to GR. it's a little further than you want to drive, but def worth it. it's about 3 hours I think.

  • I live in Grand Rapids right now and it is indeed beautiful but can be just as brutal as Chicago in March (gotta love winter weather)

I would actually second Traverse City if you're a wine fan - they have a bunch of cutsey little bed and breakfasts up there or accomodations within wineries themselves!

I'd say the U.P. is pretty much off limits till end of April, beginning of May.

  • Kalamazoo is about 2 and a half hours from Chicago... but I'm not too familiar with the area.

  • I'd recommend the Saugatuck area. It's a small touristy area, reminds me a LOT of New England coastal touristy towns. I'm sure there are great B&B's there, maybe even some with hot tubs. I am not sure if all the artsy stores are open in March, but it's worth looking into. Also a shorter drive than Traverse City

I used www.tripadvisor.com to plan my entire honeymoon trip down the coast of California. I recommend it highly.

Here's the Saugatuck hotel info, just search for hotels, B&B, restaurants, etc down the left hand side

  • Kalamazoo is a college city and has a fun downtown area. There is the Radisson hotel downtown that has nice restaurants and bars in the area.  Theres really not too much to do during the day though. Grand Rapids is a fun city too.

  • I'm originally from the west side of michigan (muskegon) and live in chicago now. Grand Rapids is only about 3 hours and is probably the best bet depending on what you are looking for in a bachelorette party. The downtown area has a lot of restaurants and bars and hotels in walking distance of each other. Renting a house/cottage will probably be tough.

Kalamazoo is a college town and in my opinion, not very fun and is most likely not what you want for a bach party (unless you like hanging with drunk college kids at lame bars). You can rent a cottage pretty much anywhere along the lake (south haven, benton harbor, new buffalo, saugatuck, etc) and they have some winery's along the coast that you could go to, but I can't speak to their nightlife. They are small lake towns, so there probably isn't much! Also, it is their off season, so it might not be as fun/enjoyable. You can go to traverse city, but we went there for a wedding a few summers ago and it took us 7 hours to drive. I can't imagine what that would be in the winter!!!

If you want to go out and party, go to GR.
