Getting a non wedding cake

I'm having a very small wedding and reception (30 people at tops).  I was thinking about getting a regular round cake as my wedding cake (like a birthday cake with no writing).  Since it won't be purchased as a actual wedding cake, the price will be under $75.  I don't see the point in spending hundreds of dollars on cake for 30 people.  Good idea or stupid?

I don't think its a bad idea at all. I know some of my local bakeries would even do a two tiered cake for around $75. That way if you want to save the first layer for the traditional 1st anniversary, then you could. Do you want your cake to be plain or did you want to put flowers or a topper on it?

I have seen some very pretty, small round cakes.

Great idea! And saving the top layer for the first anniversary is gross, anyway. ;-) There are some small bake shops and even grocery stores with delicious cakes.

    I think that's an excellent money-saving idea.

You could even order a birthday-like cake from your grocery store but request that it be plain white/ivory...  Then you could maybe put some of those edible embellishments around the sides and put a topper in the middle.  I think those sugar crystal pieces would be really pretty since they would sparkle.  Simple and elegant...

You could also order a smaller and larger round cake and stack them yourself.  Great idea :)

I'm doing the same.  I already ordered it.  I was planning to get a small "wedding" cake for $250 but I realized that if I buy 3 regular cakes I could get them for $150.  It's a no-brainer.  I'm putting them on pedestal cake stands and decorating the table with flowers.  The cakes will all be done in buttercream frosting very smooth and I'm giving the baker ribbon in the color of my wedding to wrap around them.  Once they're delivered I'll put the heads of some roses around the cake and maybe on top.  It'll be just fine.  I think that what you and I are doing is great.  By the way, I'm only having about 30 - 40 people too.

FSIL bought 3 different round cakes and displayed them on 3 seperate plates.  The plates were supported by those plastic Wilton roman columns that they use as cake seperators.  They were varying heights, and grouped together they were really pretty.  I say go for it.

Not a bad idea at all.

Actually, I am going to have a normal size (150ish people) wedding, and I plan on working out something like that, too! It's FAR too much money for a CAKE. :)

Lovely!  We're getting married in Mexico and so we're having treize leches cake.  Traditional Mexican cake, something about milk.  My fiance loves it.  Why spend all that money on a cake if it's not important to you!  No-one will care or notice, I bet!
