I don't really think it's funny...

I have a good friend that is pregnant, so naturally, practically everyone expected that they would get engaged for Christmas. Her boyfriend goes on her facebook a lot and even updates her status. It's usually pretty funny...but on Christmas day, he set her status to say, "Carly got a big, shiny one....!". So naturally, eleventy billion people posted congrats messages. I already knew he was getting her a big roasting pan she wanted, but didn't say anything on FB. So, he comments on her status at the end of the day saying, "who knew big, shiny red roasters were so exciting...not engaged, just a roaster". Eleventy billion congrats messages follow.

The next day, he changes the status to, "Carly is auctioning off the big red roaster, who knew they'd be such a hot item". Following that comment were 11 billion congrats messages again.

Carly finally clues in and updates her status, "I think I should make D his own facebook page". Following THAT comment is 11 million MORE comments!

1. CLUE IN PEOPLE. Seriously, read, and don't assume things.

2. D - that wasn't funny, people were genuine and sweet in their messages, including distant relatives who were very, very excited to hear the wedding news.

3. I don't really think it's funny that he did that. It is kinda comical, but really isn't.

  • Yup, he sounds like a giant douche canoe.

  • That's pretty lame and obviously a ploy for attention.  I wonder how your friend feels about it.  Personally, I'd be pissed.

  • Huge douche.

I had a FB friend this morning who posted a picture of his passed out drunk wife, who one could only have guessed had fallen down in the middle of the street and he snapped a picture and posted it. Awesome, asshole.

  • I don't use facebook at all.

My sister found out that her son was engaged when a friend saw his status change on facebook.  She was NOT happy

You never know, maybe she wanted the picture taken. One day I had to take my FI to the hospital because he was having a severe allergic reaction to something he ate. His throat was closing and his face was swollen... so much so that he thought he looked like the caveman in the geico commercials.  As he was getting treated he asked me to take a picture of him because he wanted to show the guys at work. I said to him "no, I'm not going to be THAT asshole."
  • my friend didn't seem too upset by it, but I think she felt bad for everyone who thought they were engaged.

I dunno - maybe I'm not that stupid, but if someone got engaged on Xmas morning, I'd sincerely hope that at 9:00 am it wouldn't be on facebook already. Anyone that actually knows her - even the littlest bit - knows that she wouldn't have done that.

  • Ok I think it would have been slightly funny if he immediately followed the original post with a comment on the roaster. As in, it would have to have been the first comment. Otherwise, yeah. Not funny.

  • I seriously judge any man in a "committed relationship" with his pregnant girlfriend who wants to get married if he doesn't just man up and pop the question.  What a loser :(

Actually, he's really not a bad guy. He's a bit weird about things though. Always trying to one-up the rest of the guys. So I think he was trying to make the other girls jealous or something? Not sure.

As for not popping the question - his divorce was just finalized about a year ago. He married the first girl he knocked up. He isn't in a rush to get married for the second time just because his girlfriend is pregnant, ya' know? They've been together for a while and own a home together, but he's not going to propose to her any sooner than he would've just because she's pregnant. She doesn't want him to either.

He might not be a bad guy, but he also doesn't sound like the smartest guy either, having knocked up at least two girls already.
  • No, definitely not the smartest.

  • I actually think that's sort of cruel. Particularly when she's going to be the one who people will ask and she'll have to explain he was joking, which is going to be pretty humiliating.

<div>This.  Even if she brushes it off, it has to be humiliating to be pregnant and have this little stunt pulled on you.  </div>
  • I totally agree Sun and Expat.

  • I had a friend do this on April Fool's day....while I know they thought it was hilarious, I don't find getting engaged something you pull April Fools on. I am still annoyed by it and when the time comes for their real engagement, I don't plan to fuss like I did the first time.
