Lets talk about awesome cars and crappy cars.

Just for the sake of something interesting to talk about, maybe. What cars have you had/have that you LOVE? What cars have you hated? Story time?

I loooved my 99 Pontiac Bonneville. It was named the Boat because of how huuuge and low to the ground it was. But I loved it. Got kind of crappy gas mileage and died on me for good after only 140,000 miles but I loved it anyway.

I now have a 06 Hyundai Elantra. Its ok, but hate the size of it. I need more room because of my lankyness. I mainly got it for its price at the time, because it was something I could afford and it had really low miles on it. I like other hyundais much better, but I hate mine.

Ok, you go.

Re: Lets talk about awesome cars and crappy cars.

  • The best car and the worst car I've had were both VW Jettas.

When I was in college I had a 12-14 year old one with no paint, AC, radio, or speedometer. It had been really poorly maintained and was a complete piece of crap.

Now we have a new Jetta and I love it. It's the perfect size for me.
  • I loved my VW Beetle, it was small but super cute and a manual which was possibly my favorite part about it. But I ran over a pole (oops) and it tore parts of the motor out.

I now drive my moms old VW passat. The size seemed good because we could fit all the dogs in and it's good for road trips. It was great until the ceiling started to leak everytime it rains. It now has a funky smell I cannot get rid of.
  • No speedometer?! Haha anna how did you manage?

  • I LOVE our 4runner.  The only bad thing is that the gas cap is really high up and I'm short, so it makes pumping gas kind of awkward.  But it's so comfy to drive.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Suzuki Sidekick.  It was my first car so I have a soft spot for it, but it was kind of a piece of crap.  The AC didn't work and it was black.  I'm not sure how I never ended up rolling it, because it has a super high rollover rate, and 16 year old me wasn't the most careful driver.

I'll add a dream car (or two):  I want a classic muscle car and a VW bus.  A GOOD year of VW bus, not the ugly newer ones.  H wants a Nova.  I'm down with that.

  • Nissans are pretty good cars overall, I think, Duds. I like the look of the Murano!

  • That was my second car, I had an 1986 BMW first and it also had a broken speedometer. Really I just learned to drive without knowing my speed. I never got a speeding ticket in either of those cars. It helped that they were so old and crappy that it was nearly impossible to get above the speed limit. Even now I never look at the speedometer though, I guess I can do it intuitively.
  • The main thing I look for in a car is how long it will last, followed by (closely) how the gas mileage is. I come from a family where a car is supposed to last 15-20 years, so I think anything less than that is a piece of crap.

I love Toyota Camrys. I had one in high school, then sold it to help pay for school. I needed a car for an internship and bought a Hyundai Elantra, which I liked well enough, but it died around 100,000 miles/10 years old on the side of the PA turnpike. Because I was in a jam, I ended up buying my grandfather's 08 Nissan Versa from him since he was selling it anyway. I like it so far, I'm just hoping it lasts a long time, or at least a lot of miles since I put about 300 miles a week on it.

My family in general is big on Mazdas and Toyotas. My dad drove a corrolla when I was little, then they had a Mazda 626 that lasted over 200k miles (18 years, I think). Now my mom has an 01 Camry, well over 125k. So, if I ever actually get to buy a new car, I'm buying a Camry.

  • Thats kind of cool, Anna. I usually have a somewhat good idea of how fast I'm going but I wouldn't want to risk it sometimes, lol. My Bonneville had a broken gas monitor or whatever you call it so I had to manually measure my miles to be sure I knew when my gas was low.

  • My first car was a 1990 Volvo 240.  I LOVED that car.  It was like a Sherman tank.  I drove it until it was 17 years old, and then it was just costing too much to upkeep, so I had to let it go.  I was so sad.

My second car was a 2000 Volkswagon Passat, and I loved that one, too, except it sucked on gas.  An idiot hit me and totaled it, so I lost it after only a year.  I have a 2002 Honda Civic now that is pretty good on gas and I haven't had too many troubles with it.  It's a good car.

  • I had a 2001 civic as my first car that was actually mine and I HATED it.  It got good milage but I put more money into it fixing it than I bought it for.

In high school I drove my parents 1997 Chevy Astro (maroon colored and everything).  It was such a beast.

I now drive a 2011 Corolla and I adore it!
  • I was thinking about a Camry when my current car dies. I have a little while to think about it, I hope. But I can't seem to let go of how much I have liked the VWs. My current one is at 160,000 miles and is mostly ok.
  • I had an 89 Honda Prelude that had only one previous owner. It had 4 wheel steering which was awesome. You could pull almost past a parking spot and still be able to turn in. It was also a stick shift which was fun except in traffic.

  • I've actually always driven a pickup truck. (Sorry from the farm here)

I had a 92' Dodge Ram and I loved it. I was this little 16 year old girl driving this huge full sized Pickup Truck. I actually had to take my driver's test in it, haha.

Now I drive a 2006 Dodge Ram, still full size, and I have to say, I love it. It gets a lot better gas mielage than that big old thing. Which is still only 16 MPG. I'm sure it's worse than half of the MPG's Anna gets in her VW. But I don't complain when we get 2 feet of snow and I can still get around the other cars stuck. Muahha.

I'm actually looking at a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee, right now now. I like the style, and I need the back row seating for babies within the next few years!
  • I LOVED my Nissan Altima. It was exactly what I wanted. It sadly died in a car accident in 2009. I then got a Ford Fusion because it was very similar to the Altima. I actually like it a lot as well, I'm just not as crazy about the color and I always wanted the Altima, so it's just not the same.

I've also had a Pontiac Grand Am and a Dodge Daytona. I loved my Daytona because it was my first car. The Grand Am was meh, but it was free, so I can't complain.
  • No shame in liking pickups, curls. ;)
    image
  • Never any shame here!
  • We can't wait to get a pickup (we live in the country also) but we are looking for a large SUV for now because a pickup is out of our budget.
    image
  • We also still have my 99 Ranger.  It has about 175,000 miles on it and is still going (knock on wood).  People might talk shiit about Fords, but that little truck has been a trooper.

  • I've only had 2 cars. Well 3, but the first doesn't count.

My first was a Ford Escort, which I thought was the ugliest car ever and was mad my mom bought it without asking me first. Luckily (?) I never got the chance to drive it - my stepdad was taking it for a drive and a huge truck ran a stop sign and they crashed. Stepdad was ok but the car was totaled.

After that, they got me a green Beretta (sp?). I had that through high school and the first few months of college until it died on me on 95. I liked it, never had a problem.

Now I drive a Ford Ranger. I love it. I don't think I'll go back to cars after driving my truck for so long.
  • I also drove a Mazda 3 for a little while and I loved that car. My mom drives it now and I like to visit it when I go home.
  • My first car was a 1981 Dodge Duster.

When I got it, it was a rusted poop brown. My dad repainted it to a sparkling emerald green.  That car was the shiz.

The last car I personally owned was a Nissan Versa hatchback

It was actually a super pain in the ass though.  My dad called it a 'Friday afternoon' car. The windshield hadn't been installed properly, so the first time it rained heavily (my car sat outside) I had a pool on the car floor. The dealership tried to tell me it was my fault and that I probably left the window open. Anyway, they ended up fixing it, and taking the dash apart to dry everything and even replaced the carpet, but it left a bad taste in my mouth from then on.
  • Trucks aren't so bad in our area. As long as you buy something in the summer here, prices aren't too crazy. I'm also looking at a newer Durango, they're basically the same thing as a Ram as far as power, etc. Just without a Bed :)

  • I seem to have bad luck usually with cars.

My first was a 1996 Toyota Corolla that my grandmother gave me after she could no longer drive.  I had it for about a year when one day I was making a turn and the wheel axle broke mid-turn.  I spun out, hit a curb, and my rear tire popped off. That was fun.

I then inherited a 1993 volvo station wagon. That thing broke down every other day on the highway.  AAA was my best friend for that whole summer.

The last car I had was a Hyundai sonata, and I loved that thing.  My brother took it to Detroit, so sadly I can no longer drive it.  FI and I are currently without a vehicle, but I would definitely get a newer Sonata when we need to purchase a car.

<div>This amazes me, mostly because I got 4 speeding tickets with a  fully functioning speedometer between age 17-25.  But I definitely had a lead foot and nobody to blame but my own stupid self.  After the 4th one, I finally learned my lesson and I have a clean record now (they get taken off after 3 years).  Knock on wood!!</div>

  • H has a Toyota Tacoma Sport and we both really like it. It's just the right size for us. It helps us when we need to haul stuff around, it's a decent size so it has a decent "back seat" but it's not a beast that looks unreasonable on the interstate. We're both also shorties, so it's easy for us to get in and out.
  • It's kind of weird to think that I have made no car payments for 4 years now. That I don't even have a car of my own.  First time since my sophomore year in college. Whack.
  • Yeah when we do get a truck, we're gonna go with a toyota tundra. Toyota is a pretty great brand over all though.

Yep. As long as you're not picky about a make of a truck, Toyota's are good!
  • My favourite vehicle was/is my F-150.  I love my truck.  H drives it for work now, but I love it to pieces.  It tows my horse trailer like a dream, feels like a beast (and is a beast) in the snow.  Love love love.

My current car, the CRV is okay.  I wish it were newer, but it's an 02 and is in fantastic shape.  Not a hint of rust anywhere on it.  It's been a good car so far.

My first car was a Toyota Tercel.  I loved the t-bone.  I wish I still had it (my brother and his wife have it though).  It's a '98 and that thing is still kicking with minimal maintenance and about 400,000kms.  I would love to have another one, but sadly they don't make them anymore.

I had a Nissan Sentra SE-R for a while, before I got my truck.  It was fast and sexy and fun, but bad on gas.  I do miss it though.  It was a pretty sweet little ride.
