Wednesday Top Five: Travel

It's Wednesday again, and time for Wednesday Top Five.

The Lowdown:

1) Post a set of five for each topic - let us know if it's in no particular order (NPO).
2) Provide pics whenever possible/applicable so we have some eye candy to look at.
3) Post explanations if you feel like it.

This week's top five is all about travel:

What are your five favorite travel spots that you've been to?

What are your top five dream destinations?

...and post away!

    Top Five Have Been

    1. Southwater Caye, Belize. Living was pretty rustic (think no hot water showers, no air conditioning), but being on Southwater Caye was an experience I love. No computers, no television, no cell phones. Homecooked foods and fresh produce. Sunsets to die for. Snorkeling within footsteps from my hut. Belizian rum.

#2. Charleston, SC. This is a tough one to classify as a "travel spot", as I lived there for two years, but it's still one of my favorite places to visit. The Lowcountry cooking, the history, the Southern Hospitality, the laidback vibe, the music, the smell of the sawgrass marshes...I miss it all. Terribly.

#3. Paris, France. I spent two weeks in Paris after my college graduation, and it was amazing. I got to see all the sights of the city, then spent a weekend in the north of France in Mont St Michel, Cancale, and St Malo.

#4. Florida Keys. I love going to the Keys. The best way to do it is to drive straight down to Key West, spend a few days there, then meander your way up through the islands until you hit Miami. The vibe is just completely different in the Keys - you literally feel like you're in a different country half the time. Not to mention, the diving is great.

#5. The Outer Banks. My family used to go to the Outer Banks every other summer and rent a beach house for the week. The Outer Banks are quiet, they're laidback, you ride your bicycle everywhere and pick up fresh produce and fish for dinner.

#6. Savannah, GA. Sorry, I couldn't pick just five. I lurve Savannah. The food, the atmosphere, the gorgeous squares, the bed & breakfasts...I luuuuuuuuuurve it.

    Top Five Want To Go

#1. South Africa. I've been dreaming of going to South Africa for years. I've always wanted to spend two weeks there - one week traveling (Great White Shark diving, safaris, biking, etc.) and a week doing charity/humanitarian work.

#2. Thailand. Crystal clear blue waters, some of the best diving in the Pacific - um, sign me up?

#3. Alaska. I've been wanting to go to Alaska for the wildlife and Denali National Park for a long time now.

#4. Ireland. I'm Irish, so it would be really cool to see where my ancestors came from. That, and eat a lot of cheese and drink a lot of beer.

#5. The "Eat Pray Love Tour" - Italy, India, and Bali. I am so in love with this book right now - it's literally the trip I've always dreamed of. Explore pleasure (ie. food) in Italy, explore prayer, meditation and the meaning of God in India, then learn to find a balance of devotion and pleasure in Bali. Sign. me. up.

Top 5 That I've Been To:

#1 Dallas, Texas - I'm sure to most people this seems like an odd choice for my top place.  But, I am a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan and have been since I was a little girl.  I dreamed of standing on the field of Texas Stadium and it was a dream come true when I did the weekend of the very last game ever played there.

I stayed at the Adolphus Hotel in downtown Dallas - which was amazingly beautiful!

And of course I did all the touristy things like go to Dealey Plaza and the Sixth Floor Museum.  Was a trip I'll never forget.

    #2 Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

Went here a few years ago and stayed at the Riu Playacar.  Gotta love all-inclusive resorts! Spent a week drinking fruity drinks, eatng way too much food, and relaxing on the beach!

#3 Islamorada, Florida - THE KEYS!!

Although it was only for a weekend, and the house we stayed in was pretty rough, it was still a beautiful place.  I still can't get over how amazing the water was - I just hope that this ridiculous oil spill doesn't mess it up!

    #4 Daytona Beach, Florida

I know it's run down quite a bit from what it used to be.  And well, I've been there way more times than I can count...but on my last trip there in November I fell back in love with it.  Obviously that late in the year, not too many people were there - which was even better.  I loved waking up in the mornings and walking the beach with the cool air blowing in... And then I found this amazing seafood joint right on the pier... as I was eating there were dolphins swimming by - sooo awesome!

Down The Hatch ... this is where I sat and had dinner with the dolphins!

    #5 Gatlinburg, TN

I've been to Gatlinburg at least 10 times and always have fun there.  Great food, the mountains, the sky lift...Love it!

I'm going to go ahead and post this before I lose it... I'll get to work on my Top 5 that I want to go to!

Kat - you should def. go! I love PEI.  It's a beautiful place.  A little touristy lately but it's coo'.  Also, Cape Breton is one of the most beautiful places around - it takes the cake over PEI, nature-wise.

I need to be a tourism promoter...I can see my tagline now: Another great Maritime destination recommend by Paige;)

Five favorites that I’ve been to:

    Hawaii, island of O’ahu

I’ve been there so many times, I know my way around well. Waikiki has gotten super-commerical over the last few years, so it makes me a little sad. I’ll have to try Maui next time.

    Costa Rica

I went there for a week in 2007 and it was amazing. The people are friendly (their Spanish is easy for me to understand), the scenery is great, and I got to learn to surf. The only down side is the bugs!

    Orlando, FL

Warm weather, Disney World, Universal, Kennedy Space Center…’nough said.

    Hawaii, Big Island

Went there this year to visit BF’s parents. The weather wasn’t that warm, but it was February. There aren’t as many white sand beaches here, but there are sea turtles!

    SoCal

I like theme parks (can you tell)? Disneyland, Sea World, Universal, and Knott’s Berry Farm.

    Places I’d like to go

    1)   On a cruise…as long as it’s to someplace warm and I can also go to a beach, I don’t really care where.

    2)   Mexico. I’ve never been and would like to see Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, or anyplace with a nice beach and warm water (notice a theme here?)

    3)   Australia. I’ve wanted to go for years. I’d like to see the great barrier reef, kangaroos, and koalas.

    4)   The Mediterranean. Greece, Italy, it’s all good. The closest I’ve been was Israel for work, and the water was so warm.

    5)   Egypt. I love ancient Egyptian history.

By the way, is there no way to add linked images other than the actual link?

    5. Best castles, fairy-tale villages and wine: Rhineland, Germany! Where I liveSmile

    Want to go:
    1. China - Catemeg, I'm dying to go to Sichuan, specifically on a Yangtze cruise.

    2) Hawaii - My parents went for 2 weeks last year for their 30th aniversary. The pics look amazingly beautiful!

    3) Alaska - I really want to go on an Alaskan cruise.

    4) Europe - After all, it's where the history comes from. lol. I would love to go back and spend more time in England/Ireland. I would love to see Paris. Touring the Mediterainian would be great.

    5) Anywhere that I can be on a beach/by a pool and have a yummy fruity drink with an umbrella in it in my hand! Umbrellas make drinks more refreshing, I swear

[QUOTE] Where I live Want to go: 1. China - Catemeg, I'm dying to go to Sichuan, specifically on a Yangtze cruise.

Oh totally go!  I didn't do a cruise, but I bet it would be nice.  Just be sure to go with a reputable company - there's a lot of ways to get ripped off as a tourist in China if you're not cautious.  It's not personal, but there's a phrase in Chinese that roughly translates as "You can always fool a foreigner."  Use TripAdvisor.com to see how other people have done it successfully!

Also, hotels out there do not have heating, so be very careful what time of year you go.  It's in the mountains so it can be quite cold most of the year.  The windows are typically wax paper stapled over the openings, so don't expect much in the way of insulation.

You should go, it's pretty awesome.  And it's ridiculously affordable.  Just let me know if you have any questions!

This is great! I already keep a running list of places that I want to go. I'm finding it much harder to make a top-5 list of the places I've been, I'll have to get back to you.

5 PLACES I WANT TO GO:

    #1) Africa  ("Cape to Cairo")
This one is on my bucket list. I want to take a few months off and travel from Capetown South Africa to Cairo Egypt.

#2) Central Asia ("The Silk Route")
In July, I am taking a train from Beijing to Moscow via Mongolia and Siberia. If it goes well, I would eventually like to return and do the same via Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan/Tajikistan

    #3) Thailand/Vietnam/Cambodia
    The most likely honeymoon destination.

    #4) Turkey

    #5) Argentina/Chile
