Wedding Invitations & Paper

ABC's of save the dates and invites?

I'm trying to help my sister who is planning  a destination wedding. How far in advance should save the dates and invites be sent? Should she have hotel info in save the dates or invitations? Anything else that would be helpful to know or suggested reading for this stuff? tia.

  • STDs are usually sent 6-9 months out.  You can provide a link to your wedding website (if you're using one).  On the website, you can list hotel information.

Send the invitations 6-8 weeks out with a reply date of no more than four weeks before the wedding.  You can include an accommodations card with hotel information for anyone who hasn't already made arrangements.  You can either buy them from your stationer, or you can get free business cards from VistaPrint.

Just remember, anyone who receives an STD should also get an invitation.  If you're on the fence about inviting somebody, don't send them an STD.

I strongly recommend that accommodations are listed on the STD itself (if not, at a minimum list the wedding website and have them listed there).  Within a few days of sending our STDs we had several rooms booked from our hotel blocks.

Plus since it's a DW, this may help guests start budgeting the trip.
  • We did not have a wedding website, but we listed the hotel block and closest airports on the STD. We had a large number of OOT guests (all flying) so it was similar to a destination wedding, except it was the city we live in. Anyway, we sent STDs at 7 months and invitations at 9 weeks or so. You can do STDs 6-9 months in advance, I'd say.
