When is the last time...

... that SNL was actually funny?  I'm watching Saturday's on DVR b/c I wanted to see Dave Matthews and it's painfully unfunny.  WTF.  So here's a poll:

Re: When is the last time...

  • I was crying i was laughing so hard on saturday, I love SNL. Ive had the "Reba" song and the "whats up with that" song stuck in my head all week. The taylor swift episode, the skit with the convict lessons was hilarious. Its always good.
  • I still think it's funny.  How can you not laugh at the Justin Timberlake skits?

  • Oy Nebb, I'm glad you and I don't share a remote :)  It could get ugly.  I'm still watching, mind you.  I have trouble "quitting" things like shitty shows/movies, I feel like I have to complete the task.
  • We never miss SNL. It might help that i drink on saturday nights. I like it even when im sober though. The january jones episode wasnt spectacular but it was still funny. I thought this past weeks episode was great though, almost all of the skits were hilarious and I loved the opening thing when he was singing. He seems kinda coked out though.
  • I can't watch it anymore.  I think it has gone downhill in more recent years.  I find that I only laugh at maybe 20% of the skits now.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • I am disappointed that "Once the original cast left" is not an option.

Though it did have some high points in the 90s - but I am so happy they started releasing the full early seasons on dvd. I love Gilda Radner so effing much

  • I don't think it is as funny as it has been in the past, but it is still amusing. Sometimes cringeworthy, sometimes laugh-out-loud worthy. It's still better than a lot of other crap on TV.
    image
  • This is just blasphemy, I think everyone is just missing the good episodes.
  • I didn't even realize it was still oin, so I'm going tohave to go with the write in vote of "not since the original cast left".

  • I thought the Taylor Swift episode was pretty funny.  Last week was kind of hard to watch and so was the week with January Jones.  She was awful.  I heard Taylor Lautner will be hosting some time in December!!  ::Fingers crossed::

  • I think it has it's moments--for instance, I love the timberlake songs, and the Gilly skits...but some of the rest of it is hit or miss.

The Palin skits were also hilarious.

  • Sorry Arbolita & aMrs... I didn't grow up in this country so I had no idea when the show originally began.

Well, I suppose enough people like it since it's still on.  Unless Lorne Michaels has some massive dirt on the NBC people or something.  I found it overall funny in the late '90s and occasionally I'd catch it more recently and found Tina Fey/Amy Poehler funny, but now... I'm trying and I just can't.
  • The gilly skits are really good. I wish they would reprise the lawrence welk skit from last season, that killed me.
  • Gilly is one of the bigger reasons I stopped watching the show.  Those skits are so annoying.

On the SNL website they have a page where you can watch skits from all the seasons - here's a bunch from the 70s for anyone who hasn't seen any of them:

  • I voted not since Spade/Farley, because I don't think I've watched more than 5 episodes since then.

However, I don't think it's been reliably funny since the Eddie Murphy days, and not classically funny since the original cast (but there were some bum skits then too). I

So, I'm actually divided in my vote, I guess.  I was thinking about Buckwheat and Velvet Jones and Roseanne Roseannadanna the other day, and Emily Litella always cracked me up.  For some reason, driving to work Monday, I couldn't get the Bass-O-Matic out of my head....

  • Hulu is usually pretty good with finding skits too--not sure if you can go that far back (70's) but you can watch some pretty funny skits.

  • I loved the ongoing Killer Bees sketches over the first two years

  • Im curious for what specific reason current episodes arent funny compared to old ones? What is so different?
  • Thanks Arb.  I'm on a super old laptop which sucks for videos, but I have seen some of the old school ones and they were always hilarious.

And yes the Palin skits were classic.  That is the one reason I miss her being at the forefront of politics.

Nebb, I just feel like they did a better job about incorperating different aspects of pop culture for that time and current events into the skits to have more of a social commentary.  They did a great job with that this past year around the time of the election with all the political sketches, but aside from that, most of the stuff has been lackluster.

ETA:  I read this article the other day, and I agree with a lot of it - especially about choosing their hosts. I would totally watch an epsiode hosted by Jane Lynch or Nathan Fillion.

  • OMG the last skit this past Saturday with that one guy...(I don't know his name) from 3rd Rock from the Son...it was hilarious! They were doing the scene from Say Anything with John Cusack when he holds up the boombox....they should have had that one on earlier...it was too cute! The digital shorts are kind of hard to watch unless it is Sandberg and Timberlake then it is hilarious!
  • Here's the schedule for the next few episodes:

12/5/09 - Blake Lively and Rihanna
12/12/09 - Taylor Lautner and Bon Jovi
12/19/09 - James Franco and Muse

I'll probably only watch/DVR the James Franco one.

  • I believe Seth Myers and Justin Timberlake could save the show.   I LOVE every single moment that JT is on there.  I wish he would just JOIN it.  Maybe that would lessen the awesomeness of when he does pop in, but I dunno.  He's hilarious.  And Seth Myers is way funnier than people give him credit for.

"Whatever East. You're just mad I RSVP'd "lame" to your pre-wedding sleepover."
  • My reasoning is probably one driven more by emotion - I simply grew up with the 70s and 80s stuff, and I just can't identify with the skits anymore. I know who most of the guest hosts at least ARE but I don't identify with them, and I know very few of the musical guests.  Justin Timberlake is funny - I've seen him as a guest host before.  I also think the wrestling guys - Rock, etc. were always funny when they were on.

I agree with what Arb said, but for me, it was also more that it was a unique show.  Other shows tried to "be" SNL (Fridays, anyone?) and failed.
The Wayans Brothers succeeded with In Living Color, a skit show that I loved and produced a fair amount of successful comedic actors (some may agree or not), similiar to early SNL, but the show was terrific - I still watch reruns when I can find it.

  • I do remember watching In Living Color when I was a kid and I could convince my dad to let me stay up late; same thing with SNL when Norm MacDonald was the Weekend Update anchor.  I would stay up just to see Update, then turn it off

  • thanks for playing ladies but I'm off to bed.  have a great thanksgiving all!
  • The night that Anne Hathaway hosted last year was really funny during certain skits. There is one sketch where it was her, Amy Pohler, and Kristin Wiig....OMG she had these baby hands. I can't find it on youtube. If anyone could, I'd love you forever!

  • I have never actually seen a full episode of SNL. We watched some of one episode when we were in Vanuatu (strangely enough... when we were in the US, we didn't come by it) and I didn't quite get a lot of the humour.
