Priest being transferred

My fiance and I learned in mass on Sunday that the priest who is supposed to be marrying us is being transferred to another parish in January (our wedding is in May).  Has this happened to anyone else and how did the church deal with it...just assign you a new priest or have you select another?

At the parish I work at, when our priests were changed in the spring our new priests just took over all the weddings.

It seems to be like that most places. Chances are though if you are really attached to the priest who is leaving that even if you ask him to come back he might not. I know when our priests moved they didn't want to come back because it wasn't fair to the new priests. also they didnt want it to be like they were playing favourites coming back for some.

Actually, most places in our diocese the priest comes back for the weddings. You work it out with him about meetings.

This happened to me - my pastor moved to a new parish about 2 months before my wedding. The new pastor took over for my wedding and most other weddings that summer. We did request for our friend, a deacon, to do the homily.

But the old pastor did come back to concelebrate. The other couple getting married that day was really close to him and had asked him to preside at their wedding; he stuck around to concelebrate at ours because we were also pretty close.

Thanks for the info ladies! We are in a special situation because we attend on church but are getting married in another.  We had to bring a priest from our home parish to the church our ceremony is at.  So we asked the priest specifically because we knew he'd be open to traveling (the pastor, for example, is older and we doubt he would).  In any case, I'm sure we'll have a great priest for our wedding day :)
