Re: cat food

  • We feed our cat Pro Plan Select (salmon flavored).  A medium sized bag is about $15-20 and generally lasts about 1.5 months.
  • Confetti gets Trader Joes wet food ($0.59 for 5.5 oz can) and an organic dry food from TJ's as well, but we're going to switch to Iams after this bag is up.

  • Isn't wet food bad for their teeth anyway? Besides being expensive, I mean.
  • My cat, Crazie, eats Halo Spots Stew Indoor. It's about 17 for a 6lb bag. But there is always a $2 off coupon on the Halo site you can print out. It lasts about a month.

She was eating Science Diet Light until a few months about. That was about 25 for 15 lbs (I think). I switched her once I saw some of the stuff that goes into a lot of pet food. Gross :(

  • It's around $15 for a big bag that lasts my two cats for about a month and a half.
  • Is wet food safe? I remember a few years ago a bunch of animals dying because of wet food? I dont remember the brand or why anymore.
  • From what I've been told, wet food isn't great for them but it's ok.  Dry food helps their teeth and helps keep plaque away.  And wet food can cause them to have loose stools (I think?!) depending on their digestive system.
  • She gets a mix of Science Diet Skin and Friskies Medley-turkey/beef. Also Fancy Feast tender beef wet food. We pay about $10 a month for all of it.

Wet food has been said to be bad for their teeth because it gets stuck on it while crunchy food "cleans" the tartar, but now research is saying they are equally plaque building. Wet food does give more hydration though since most cats don't drink enough water. (unsolicited advice for the night)
  • Yeah, I heard wet food caused issues with their teeth but it was really only a problem if that was the majority of their diet and a mix of the two types was okay. I didn't think about the water thing, thats interesting
  • Ditto Anna. One of our cats does get wet food as well (Friskies Classic Pate, she won't eat anything with chunks) but the other doesn't. They're on 2 different diets/feeding routines. The wet food is like 50 cents/can.

Back in 2007 Nutro/Iams/Purina and some others had a massive recall because of bad ingredients. What a shitstorm that was.
  • Oh ps - OMG NEBB YOURE GETTING A CAAATTT?!?!?!
  • Whisky gets Fancy Feast wet food, grilled style. I keep Meow Mix dry food out all the time but he doesn't eat it as much. His stomach can only handle so much dry food so he mostly gets the wet. It's not good for their teeth (can rot their teeth, especially for younger cats), but hell. He's old, he only has 4 teeth, and the cancer fvcked up his digestive system. So, wet food it is.

I don't know how much it costs, honestly. I usually have a coupon for both, and the dry food lasts forever since he doesn't eat it as much.
  • Our hedgehog east cat food and is a very picky eater. He eats only Fancy Feast we food (about 60 cents a can) and Boots and Barkley dry food from Target (about $4 a bag). I know it's not the highest quality but it's the only thing he'll eat.

  • I heard cats were supposed to eat wet food because it more closely mimics what they would eat in the wild or something, especially if they are overweight. Now I'm all confused. We feed Baxter dry food because it's more convenient and the canned food made his poo super stinky. Right now he's eating Iams Healthy Naturals, and I can't remember how much it was but Walmart online has it like $13 for a 6 lb bag.

Stella gets Authority weight management. She's a bit of a husky girl. She gets the wet food 1-2 times per week and goes NUTS over any of the seafood flavours. The food is about $10 for a 4 lb bag and lasts 4-5 weeks.

  • Our cats eat Wellness Indoor Health dry cat food and meow mix market select wet food. The two of them split one can of wet food each night. Wet food is actually better for them because it hydrates them and dry food can actually dehydrate cats. Wet food is also more meat product than grain product like dry food can be and cats are carnivores so really they shouldn't be eating grain at all.

Wet food is fine for cats, it's actually a good idea to offer both (controlled portions though of course).  Dry food has a lot of carbs/grain in it because it helps to bake the kibble, and since their diet in the wild is primarily protein, their bodies don't process it as well.  When cats come to my work that need to lose weight, a lot of times we will suggest switching to mostly canned food because of the high water content and protein--keeps them fuller, longer.  We have a handful or so of clients who had cats that regurgitated on a regular basis--they switched to grain free canned and it either stopped or decreased in frequency.

ETA: the only thing that actually rots their teeth is bacteria that causes plaque and tartar buildup.  Then it causes gingivitis which causes bone loss, which then causes the teeth to rot and or fall out.  To answer OP's question though, I feed my cat Science Diet Oral Care dry (the kibble is about the size of a marble and is made to not shatter when they bite into it) plus some canned, usually nutromax (she loves it!).  I think the cans are .79 each and the dry food is about $23/8lb bag.
  • We feed our cats Blue For Sensitive Stomachs because Motley has had stomach problems (inflammed stomach lining, etc.) and I want to be on the safe side and prevent any future issues... and the other cats don't seem to mind. It usually costs between $16-$20 - the same we would pay for regular food.

  • Iams dry food and I will be adding a small amount of wet food too, brand tbd. I read the stuff about wet food being good for hydration and not drinking enough is something I worry about with this cat. She is a skinny thing and highly active so I am not too worried about her getting fat yet.

I think the bags of dried food are like $12 for a medium bag? They last at least a month.

  • Science Diet for old cats. She's 16 years old.  She'd really prefer canned Tuna.
  • We give our cats Wellness Core Dry food (um, it was like $55 plus tax for a 12lbs bag) and then we mix it with Wellness Wet food that is $3.19 (plus tax) for the largest can - a can makes us about 4 servings for 2 cats.  I think when we went last time our bill with tax was like $85 but that is enough wet food for the month and dry food for at least a month and a half.

When we first got our kitty (now plural) Steph#s gave me a link to a website that had info about animal food. I can find it if you want.  More or less we decided that while it is ridiculously expensive we were still going to choose to buy really high quality food for them. We can't afford raw but this is the next best thing really. No gluten or corn or fillers. These are the first six ingredients on the dry food: Deboned Turkey, Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whitefish Meal, Potatoes, Salmon Meal

On the recommendation of my vet, we do all wet for both cats. One of them will only eat fish-based foods, and the other has some sensitive stomach issues, so we have to use a fairly expensive brand (it's called BFF, and runs $1.30/can).

It's been about a year and a half since we switched to an all-wet diet, and both cats have lost a good amount of weight (both were kinda pudgy), have fewer hairballs, and their teeth aren't worse than they were with dry. My vet is pretty thrilled with the results.

ETA: Each cat gets 1.5 cans per day, so their food runs us almost 4 bucks total every day. Spoiled little buggers.
  • We use IAMs dry, weight control/indoor/plus hairball remedy.

My cat can't stomach wet food. He gets sick, even when I try to just give him a snack. So, we stick to dry.

  • I use Science Diet healthy development for kittens. Its about 20 per 7 pound bag. They also get Fancy Feast canned food 2 or 3 times a week. Its usually 50 cents a can if I catch it on sale.

  • Aside from the fact that Samson has to have special kidney food most of the time, the "normal" food we feed is Chicken Soup for the Catlover's Soul. We buy it on Amazon (free shipping with Prime) and it's about $30 for 18 pounds. It's one of the cheapest high quality foods on the market, I think. And the cats love it.

Here's a list of cat food ratings if you want to measure quality and price:
    http://www.petfoodratings.net/cattable.html

The food I feed is 5 stars, which is the same as Orijen, Wellness Core, Innova, etc, but all those other ones are much more expensive.

Chicken Soup for the Catlovers Soul does contain grain, which some people don't want, but it's good quality (not brewer's yeast or any of that stuff).

  • Jojo eats Mounds  http://moundspet.com/mounds-brands/purrfect-cat/  I don't remember what it costs.

My last cat, Tom Kitty had to eat wet food in his later days because he had kidney problems and we had to make sure he was getting enough fluids.

  • This is all super helpful :) Thank you guys!

Numbers, can I get that link you were talking about if you can find it? Id like to tuck that away for later if we do decide to get one.
  • gah. $10-$15/mo for food? Maybe I should have gotten a cat.
