NWR: Question for teachers?

Are you allowed to post pics of your students on facebook?

One of my fb friends just posted some pics of her class. That just doesn't seem right.

Are there rules about this?

  • Our teacher's aren't allowed to have any sort of school photos or mentions on their facebook. She could also get in huge trouble if any of the kids did not release their picture to be used outside of the yearbook (not sure if all schools do this).
  • PHEW I'm glad this wasn't about ADHD.

I'm not a teacher, but I think it's highly unprofessional, and if my child ended up on someone's facebook page without my permission, I'd be suing someone's ass.

Mrs. B - Either O or S... not sure what district, but I'm betting O.

I feel the exact same way about both comments.
  • A knottie who shall remain nameless posted some pictures of classes she was teaching on here. We kept telling her to take them down, and she thought we were over exaggerating.

And eventually, she took them down. I think it's kind of a rookie mistake that should never, ever be made.

Don't they teach that stuff in college?

  • She needs to get them down NOW.  ER will escort her off campus for stuff like that.

  • We're not close, but should I shoot her a facebook message?  I mean, I'm sure it's harmless (like she doesn't mean anything bad with the pics), but I don't want to see the chick lose her job!

Would you want someone to tell you?
  • Absolutely, tell her

    definitely!
  • I dunno, I don't necessarily think it's such a big deal, if she's done her privacy settings right.  If she has the shots set to "friends only", it's just as if she had hard coipes and was showing them to friends in her apartment.

  • I would tell her. Then she can make her own decision.

I'm a biitch and over protective of kids, but I would be calling her school district if she didn't take them down.

  • I would tell her. It's amazing what doesn't come to teachers as common sense with regards to facebook. One of ours didn't understand why she should take down the profile pic of her in a bikini with a beer...until that pic suddenly and mysteriously became plastered on the lockers in the school...
  • Superhero, I bet like most people, over 75% of the people on her friend list she would never, ever have in her apartment.

You would think but teachers are held to a whole different standard (unfairly at times).    Always better safe than sorry with FB.

  • Guh!

Help me word a message that's short and sweet and doesn't make me seem like a biitch.

I really haven't talked to this girl in forever... I don't want my first contact to be asshole-ish.
  • I would totally message her. It only takes one complaint for things like this to cause massive issues.
  • Most high schoolers can get through facebook privacy settings if they want to, and if she tagged any of them and they have a facebook account they will be notified (not sure what she teachers so this may be irrelevant).
There is no internet privacy as far as school systems are concerned.
  • It's not against my union's rules, but I assume every state/province is different.
  • I would never. Hell no. We aren't even allowed to write our kids' last names on anything nevermind take their pictures!
    image
  • A- blame it on something you heard recently

"I recenlty heard of some teachers getting in trouble for some things they posted on FB.  I'd hate to see that happen to you so maybe you should consider taking down  your students' pictures?"

  • These aren't high-schoolers.  They are in first or 2nd grade.  Cute little munchkins...

I just know that I don't want a lot of my pictures showing up around cyberspace, much less pics of my child!
  • Against rules or not, I would hope that teachers would have more respect for their kids and their parents than that.

    Is all common sense gone?

It's not specifically against ours either but it falls in that very gray area of ethics.  All it takes is a parent complaint and teacher is guilty.

  • I would just say what B typed out.
Little kids could be even worse, I think most parents are more sensitive about pictures of their 10 year olds floating around on the internet than high schoolers.
