Too Young To Feel This Damn Old!

(yes I borrowed the subject title from a Garth Brooks song...)

I came across this article on Yahoo today, wanted to share with you guys.

Beloit College in Wisconsin comes out every year with their annual Mindset List. The list was developed by an English professor and the college's public affaris director, and its purpose is to help professors "craft lesson plans that are more meaningful" and "to remind teachers that cultural references familiar to them might draw blank stares" from this fall's incoming freshman, most of whom were born in 1992.

Here is the Mindset List for the Class of 2014, direct from the Beloit website:
http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2014.php

And, if you're interested, the full article on Yahoo:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100817/ap_on_re_us/us_mindset_list

I read through that list and thought ... oh God ... why do I feel so damn old?! But it's true!

Thoughts?

I read the title and have had that song in my head since..Thanks.

I remember back in school, my teachers made us learn or write in cursive because it was a MUST for (insert next level of schooling). I still use cursive the majority of the time becuase it just looks nicer.

    19. They never twisted the coiled handset wire aimlessly around their wrists while chatting on the phone.

I remember when I got a phone in my room and I was SO excited b/c I could talk and lay in bed at the same time.  I always played with the cord while chatting.

I'm the class of 2012 and still feel kind of old reading the mindset of the class of 2014.

We HAD to learn to cursive, otherwise we wouldn't have passed the third grade. I also love when it talks about people from 1990--the year I was born--and it said, "Jim Henson and Sammy Davis Jr have always been dead."

Both died on my EXACT birthday.

Yeah, some of the classic stations play Nirvana - my favorite classic rock station does. But they also play Green Day.

This is mine, but I disagree with most of it. http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2002.php

I remember the Challenger, I had an Atari 2600, Pong, records, traditional roller skates, and watched Mork from Ork. I feel like this list is for people born in 1984, not 1980 (I was actually born in 1979, but most of my classmates were '80).

Wow this list brought me back and made me sad at the same time. Good lord.

Leia- on your list #1 says people entering college this fall were born in 1980.  I was the graduating class of 2002 (from high school) entered college that August and I was not born in 1980 when... not sure about their math there.

I always wrote in cursive and I had a big ass giant book to practice writing my letters. Now I write half in cursive, half in print. I don't know how that happened. lol. I loved twirling the phone cord around Paige! I was so excited :) Jesus, we had a rotary phone still when I was a kid. I hated that damn thing. If you messed up you'd have to hit the button and start over.

I agree with the 3 networks thing I can remember when we first got cable and I was like "Oh my god my life has changed" - the little books we used to get that told us what was on HBO, Showtime, Cinemax - I miss those. LOL.

I'm fairly sure this class never worked with the Dewey Decimal System or played Oregon Trail on a green and black computer screen. Disk drives were awesome!

Haha thanks for the nostalgia :)

Ahh yes that monster brought me endless years of joy. I was 4 when I went into first grade in 1988 and that was the first computer I ever used. Oregon Trail should be a "must play" for any child. Hello, in what other video game can you trek across the country in a covered wagon and die of syphillis along the way while your cow falls into the river?

    That's right. None.

My brother and I would fight over who got to play the game all the time! But he was much better at hunting than I was. I would kill maybe 1 squirrel if I was lucky.

Also, did anyone else give the names of their Oregon Trail family names of people you hated and laugh when they died of dysentary?

Would someone do me a favor...find my cane and help this old lady to bed for a nap?  My goodness I feel so old after reading all of that...esp the fact that most of them were born in 1992...that's the year I graduated from high school!

The best one of the list for me was the Fergie one...Fergie will always be the Princess - I was glued to the TV to watch the royal wedding (watched Princess Di's wedding, too)

I read this article this morning. I remember having to learn cursive. I don't know when the last time I used it was, but the teachers always made it seem like if you couldn't write it then you were going to fail at life. Seems like a waste of time looking back. I taught my two younger sisters how to write in cursive and my one sister got in trouble for writing in cursive in kindergarten because of it. I was really confused at the time because my teacher made such a fuss about needing to know it and my sister got points off for being "ahead."

I remember Fergie (the pop star) being Stacy Ferguson on Kids Incorporated, which I watched on Saturday mornings. And to me "Fergie" is the Dutchess of York.

Nottheonlydreamer, they're assuming these are 18 yr old freshman that will graduate college in year X. I graduated college in 2002 and most of my classmates were born in 1980. I'm guessing it was written in 1998, the year I graduated HS/started college.

Jem,  you cracked me up with that. The good ole' MS-DOS system. That was the only thing we had to play on that computer pretty much (OT). I remember being so freaked out when our school got them. Floppy disks and card catalogs were way gone by the time the 1992 crowd rolled around.

I miss 'Baby-Sitters Club' and "The Box-Car Children" books, oh and of course "Choose Your Own Adventure." Sometimes I want to go back to that book and have it pick out my life decisions (hopefully I won't reach a dead end and have to go back.)

Ok not to make this all wedding related but can we discuss the whole cursive thing? I learned how to write in cursive but after 5th grade (where my teacher required us to write in cursive at all times) I've never had to since except for writing checks. Today I'm starting to address my wedding invitations and my mom insists that they must be hand written and they must be written in cursive. My cursive really isn't that great since I'm out of practice so she's going to address most of them.

Who will address the invitations for the generate entering college now? I guess they will all have to pay someone or maybe people will get over the "etiquette" of handwritten addresses and allow printed labels!
