Alterations help! Too much zipper in the back

Hi alll, I purchased a dress with a high neckline and I am very worried about alterations. The dress has a very high lace neck line that also covers most of the back. The zipper closure starts high on the back of the neck and goes all the way down past the rear. I am very petite with a short torso, so while the dress fits beautifully in the front but there is about an inch and a half of extra fabric in the back on the lace part of the bodice where the zipper puckers out away from the body. Can anything be done to fix this? How costly would an alteration like this be? Any advice would be appreciated. http://www.jessicamcclintock.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10002&storeId=10001&productId=184052&categoryId=10331&subcatname=Wedding%20Gowns&spage=1&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10318

Re: Alterations help! Too much zipper in the back

  • I looked at the link to your dress and it is lovely. However, I'm confused by your question:

    - did you already get the dress, ordered, from the bridal salon, and they are doing alterations?

    - Did you try it on and they have ordered it and you don't have it yet?

    - Did you buy it from an alternative source (ebay) or off the rack at a sample sale and have no arrangements with a salon for alterations?

If the alterations have not been done yet, then I'd assume a good alterations dept or seamstress can make this fit you properly. I am short too, but alterations should include making the dress fit perfectly. This can be fixed. If you are working with a bridal salon, make sure they get it to fit properly. If not, go to your local board (see link on left for "local wedding boards" and post on the board near you to get the name of a good seamstress.

    Good luck.

The zipper will need to be taken out and resewn. For pricing, you'll have to ask around locally. This is an international board and prices vary greatly from place to place.
