Wednesday night!

Re: Wednesday night!

  • We are ordering infant ear muffs so we can take him to the Seattle Sounders matches with us so I may just have to put those on him when we see it so he doesn't cry if it's too loud.

  • Liv -- I admit to loving wines.  And I'm a northern Californian, it's in my upbringing.  What kinds of wine are you already drinking?
  • Yeah when I lay on my back Oz likes to lay in between my legs. I actually seem to sleep better like than when I'm sleeping in our bed at night.

So we ordered some fall battery lit garlands on Saturday for the wedding. We're getting married infront of a big fireplace with a mantel so we thought they would look really pretty up there with some candles. Well my mom got home tonight to find that UPS had put 6 boxes leaning up against her garage door. She had to get out in the rain (with a bad hip) to move them. Only one got wet, but they could have been ruined with all of the storms we've had lately. And who thinks it's a good idea to put a package against a garage door anyways?!?
  • Good night ladies.  My work is almost done so I'm heading for bed.
  • Night loopy!
  • I see absolutely no reason to be embarrassed for drinking wine under $20. That just means more wine. And when you have the wine habit that I, and apparently a lot of the night crew on E do, the under $20 just makes economic sense.

  • That's been happening a lot in Seattle too aleigh. I think it's on the news once a week about a Seattle cop brutalizing someone.

  • Good night, Loopy!

Liv -- there's no need to be embarrassed.  I don't think you need to spend a fortune on wine to drink well.  Right now I'm drinking a Coppola Claret, it's almost definitely under $20, and it's easy, matches well with meats, and I've got tons of it leftover from my wedding.  I was more interested in what varietals you've been trying (riesling, merlot, pinot noir, etc.), not the specific labels.
  • Do they get to keep their jobs after doing something like that? Aren't they supposed to be role models?
  • When you get above a certain price point, the wine doesn't really become any "better" it might just be more rare or from a brand that people are willing to pay a marked up price to say they bought.

A lot of cheaper wines are actually starting to taste better because they aren't using traditional corks that let in air.
  • Some of the ones here aren't even getting punished for it.

  • Guys, my kitty cat is outside and we have a tornado watch and usually she comes in when we call her and she's not coming and I'm freaking out.
  • Right now, H and I are loving wines from the Bordeaux region.  I don't know why, but in general, for the same price, the French can make a tastier wine than even California.  And I say that as a Californian!  I also love white Burgundys (basically Chardonnay done French-style: more minerally, less oaky/buttery).  On the lower budget end, I love wines from Chile, Argentina, Australia and Spain and find that they give great quality for the money.
  • You just need to start trying more kinds! Tastings are good for that because you can try two varietals back to back and determine which you like better. And the sommelier can recomend things for you based on whether you like certain wines they are offering.

  • A lot of price has to do with how much the winemaker produces.  If they have a limited release that gets good reviews from Robert Parker, they can raise the price.
  • Aleigh, my mother's cats all respond to her tapping the bottom of a ceramic saucer (she feeds them in saucers).  Do you have a way of calling your cat?
  • Mica- we're moving to CA soon and I cannot be more excited. Granted we are going to San Diego, not Napa, but that's ok! H is already living there and he's scoped out a few local places that do tastings pretty regularly and I have a feeling I'm going to become a regular at them.

  • Well, there are classic pairings, like pinot noir and salmon or sauternes and fois gras, so yes, it's helpful to know about pairings.  You can even google pairings.  Food does help with learning about wines.  I used to read the LA Times wine reviews that suggested food pairings.  Oh, and I subscribed to a wine magazine a bit to get suggestions of things to try together.  It helps the experience.

The most important thing is to try the stuff you really want to taste with a clean palatte.  If you've been drinking all night, you might not appreciate the nuances in your wines after you're tipsy.
  • I just drink what I feel like drinking and don't really pay attention to "pairings." I drink red with chicken dishes all the time because that's what I like. I'm not a big foodie and I'm never going to be a wine genius, so if I like something, I'll order it again. If not, i switch. About 95% of the time I'm drinking red even if the meal is "supposed" to be paired with a white. I do drink white more in the summer, but that's mainly because its lighter.

Just drink what you want and you can't go wrong.

  • Tortis- that's awesome.  You know, Temecula isn't too far from San Diego.  And of course the central coast will be a great weekend trip, you can replay Sideways!  Yay for CA!  I'm already getting nostalgic that I'm going to leave soon and move to Florida -- not exactly wine country.

Anyone have suggestions for how to move our wine collection?
  • I think my subconcscience knew there was wine talk going on right now.

Hi ladies!  I'm drinking one of my faves, Jam Jar, and watching TV.  My aunt is here visiting, but is totally thrown off with the time change and is asleep on the couch right now, and H has overnight duty tonight.

  • Haha I just gave the exact opposite advice that Mica gave, and I'm going to defer to her. She seems to know what she's talking about!

  • How much wine are you talking about Mica? We're part of a wine club and get a case shipped to us every few months. I think it just comes in a normal box without much packaging. I'm sure if you talked to UPS/USPS or a moving company they probably have sort of way of transporting wine.

K Im off to bed. Night!
  • I wish I had a wine collection to move! I can't hold on to a bottle for long, it starts calling my name. We do have a few nicer bottles that we are "saving" and I have to trick myself into thinking they aren't just sitting there waiting for me.

  • Also, the Wine Enthusiast magazine we get is mostly a brochure for their other products. Not sure if they have a specific wine mag. I took a wine course in college. I would look into seeing if they do that around you or if any specialty wine/whiskey shops do tastings and teachings. We have one here that does weekly tasting and tell you about each wine.
  • Mica, yeah, I am so ready! I've never lived anywhere other than Ohio and H got an awesome job offer so we're leaving! And with the monsoons the midwest has been having, I'm really thinking we made the best decision ever. Even if it means I have to take the bar exam twice in 6 months.

  • WE GET TO MOVE ON SUNDAY!!!

I made sure we didn't have to move one of our bottles tonight.
