DC Wedding License Questions..

A few questions for anyone that knows

1.  Do the bride/groom to be need to be present to apply for the marriage license?

2.  Does the license expire within any timeframe?  We're getting married May 1 2010 - Can we apply/get anytime and will it still be valid (can we get in March)

Thanks for any heads up!

Re: DC Wedding License Questions..

  • A quick search pulled up this:
    http://www.dccourts.gov/dccourts/superior/family/marriage.jsp

It doesn't say specifically, but as there are places on there for both to sign, and I think most areas do require both people to be present, I'd say at the very least it's a good idea.  Your best bet, though, is to call the clerk of court and ask them directly, so it's not just a matter of interpreting the jargon on a website.

  • Thanks - that's not really of any help. I've already gone to the appropriate web sites and as you have also noted - they don't give any clear information other than the application.  Getting them on the phone is challenging so this being THE KNOT and with other people going through the process I figured SOMEONE will have to know the answers to my 2 questions.

    Anyone?

The clerk of the county you are getting married in will tell you. Just call them, go in person,  Or try the LOCAL board.  This is an international board, and every county in the USA  is/can be completely different.  The easiest solution is call the clerk of the county you (or stop by) will be married in (not where you live).

But usually both need to be there & they do expire (each state/ county has different time frames)

edit: after I posted I realized you posted on your local - sorry for the snark. But again the clerk of court is the best bet. I mean things can change, so getting it from the source is the best bet.

  • this may not help, but i'm getting married in MD. And only bride OR groom needed to be present. I went and completed the application and swore under oath everything was correct, true and all that. MD licenses are valid for 6 months. And I agree about calling the court clerks, I called a few times with lots of questions, and they were always answered.

I did some quick research, and it looks like DC licenses never expire. You just have to wait 5 days before it's valid. I cant find anything concrete about who needs to be present (bride, groom or both), so I'd just call the court. Ask for the license dept.

    Good luck!
  • Thanks everyone. I got my answers.

    DC licenses never expire.

Neither party needs to be present - but much easier if both (or one) is.

You do have to wait 5 days to pick up the actual license - but ANYONE can pick it up as long as they have a receipt.

So my fiancee and I will go in when we're down in March and my FMIL will pick up the license the following week and keep it until our wedding at the beginning of May
