Skin care question

Since I moved here, my skin has been a complete wreck. I'm breaking out, and it will NOT go away. I havent ever really had this problem, and the usual stuff I was my face with is not helping at ALL. I'm going insane, and I hate the way i look right now. I'm pretty sure it's the humidity here thats making my skin freak. =/

What do you use on your skin to keep it under control?

Re: Skin care question

  • wish I knew. Bareminerals did help immensely but its awful again. I don't think anything can make me feel as bad as bad skin, even with makeup you can still see itand I feel ugly as hell w/o makeup
  • I havent worn makeup since my honeymoon. I was allergic to the new foundation I bought, and my skin was a mess. So I havent really worn anyting at all since then. I want SOMETHING to cover my skin right now, but I'm wary of trying something new. I feel gross, and sometimes, I dont want to go out because I'm feeling ugly. I'm hoping I can find a cleanser or something to help clear up my skin.

    This.
Some mornings while doing my makeup I just want to scrub it all off and go back to bed. It doesnt help that my drive home melts it all off and I look like a hot mess when I get home.
  • Because of the recent move to a different climate, is there any possibility that it's eczema instead of acne? Or a stress induced bacterial infection? Roxy- didn't you also have a sudden change after a move? I can't remember enough to recall is that was the case.

  • Mmm, Its gotten worse since I've lived here but I've been here almost 3 years now. It had been getting better for may and june since the week before my trip to NC in July it got bad again and has just gotten worse. Its definitely not excema. Its cystic
  • Roxy, thats awful. :( Im sorry.

Petra - I'm pretty sure its acne instead of anything else. If its doesnt clear up soon, maybe I'll see a derm about it.

How long have you been using Bare Minerals for? I've read in a couple articles that because it's so finely milled it can get into pores (or something, not exactly sure) and cause cystic acne. Maybe that's it?

Are you washing your brushes on a regualr basis?  I find if my skin starts breaking out bad and I think about it, I'll realize its been a few weeks since I washed them.  So I do and it almost immediately starts to clear up.

  • Hi! I'm pretty new, and I don't know if you're just asking for tips from the regulars here, but I've had skin problems for my entire life, so I feel like I should pass on some advice :)

After going to dermatologists for years, and having them prescribe numerous creams and gels and washes that worked for maybe a month and then were ineffective, I ended up making up my own skin care regimen that works AMAZINGLY when I actually stick to it.  Here's what works for me-- keep in mind, I have an oily T-zone and get breakouts mainly on my chin and jawline.

    1. Use an exfoliating face wash in the morning; one's that meant for daily use.
    2. Use a skin-safe foundation, like Neutrogena or the CoverGirl "clean" line.
    3. At night, use a normal clarifying wash, again like the simple Neutrogena facial wash, then follow it with a Stridex pad.
    4. Most importantly, do not use any overnight creams. Your skin needs a good amount of time to breathe with absolutely nothing on it, and sleep-time is a good time for that.

Sorry to write sooo much.  I just feel your pain, lol.

  • I went to the dermatologist this week and she suggested the Obagi clenziderm system. Its pretty pricey but like y'all said bad skin makes me feel ugly too. I want to hide and I will not leave my house. So i think I'm going to try it out regardless of the cost.
I don't know how long it's been since you moved but sometimes It takes a while for your skin to get used to different environments. If it's only been a month I would give it some more time. If it has been going on for months then I would suggest seeing a dermatologist and maybe they can recommend something.  Goodluck!

  • I don't think its from the BareMinerals although East could be onto something...I haven't washed my brushes in....uh, the several months I've had them......

Mand- Hahaha no need to be a reg. to dole out advice :)

I did go to the derm back in march ish and she gave me antibiotics that helped some but not a lot. I need to go back but its spendy and I'm broke...
  • Oh my... I haven't even thought of washing my make-up brushes.  Trying that...
  • MandK, thanks! You don't have to be a regular to answer. :)
Thats EXACTLY where I'm breaking out right now, my jawline. I'm going to try the things you suggested. Hopefully it works as well for me as it does for you! :)
    image
  • Has anyone tried any perscription stuff they've had a lot ofluck with? I realize not the same stuff works for everyone but....
  • The only thing that worked wonders for me was a steroid cream, I can't remember the name of it.  My skin broke out right before C came back from Iraq and I had a sh*t fit at the derm saying I couldn't look like that for his homecoming.  I will try to find the name but my skin cleared up within 4 or 5 days.
  • Eastieloo- I didn't buy any brush cleaner, can I just use soap and water or shampoo orrrrr?
  • So glad I had something useful to add to the boards, lol!

Also, since that is where you're breaking out, I heard something about the reason for your breakout based on where the breakout is occurring.

If your acne is mainly on your jawline, one of the major contributors is stress.
If it's on your cheeks and nose, it's mostly your diet.
And if it's on your T-zone, that's almost primarily hormones.

    So de-stress, lady! :)

  • Roxy ...Clindamyacin a topical antibiotic I just roll on at night really works.
    Wedding Countdown Ticker
  • Wow Mand, that's good to know!  I must be a really stressed out person then...
  • I read in a magaizne or somewhere that using your regular face wash is ideal, because it willl pull off the all the oils and dirt the same as it would your face.  Thats what I do.  it seems to work.

"Whatever East. You're just mad I RSVP'd "lame" to your pre-wedding sleepover."
  • I know I'm stressed, I don't know how to relax though haha Mines is on my jawline/ cheeks- mostly right above my jawline though.
  • I must be more stressed than I realize! haha
    I'll try to de-stress :)
    image
  • East- Perfection! Definitely doing that tonight.
  • Also, if you notice its mainly on one side of your face or keeps coming back in the same places, disinfect your cell phone and change out your pillowcase.

I'm sorry to hear that it's cystic, Roxy. That is the worst.. A dear friend of mine suffered from horrible (and painful) cystic acne from age 11 through age 23. Her face was so scarred, and dermatologists her mom took her too were jerks. Basically, they told her mom that she was a dirty girl and needed to bath more. Gaa! She tried everything including Proactiv, which worked for about 4 months, and then failed utterly.

Anyhow, I talked her into looking at getting on a low-dose pill. Loestrin Fe 120, or it's generic. After 6 months, she would still get breakouts, but a breakout was redefined as a single cyst at a time. She scrubbed with St Ives Apricot medicated scrub every morning, and in time, even the scars started going away.

ETA: the low-dose BC is because cystic acne is very often from a very slight hormone imbalance.

  • Clindamyacin ruined my skin, I was also directed to use it in the morning but I don't think that makes a difference.  My skin is almost too sensitive for perscription topicals.
  • Well, I talk to my mom on the phone everyday after work- on my drive home. You know, when I'm sweating like a pig because its hotter than hell and I'm not smart enough to buy a car with AC.....This also happens to be the cheek thats the worst.
I need to get a handsfree.
  • Petra- I used to take orthotricyclen lo and it did not help. They did test me for some hormonal imbalances (other symptoms of that, other than my face) but didn't find anything.
Proactiv did nothing for me, it seriously sucked. Nuetrogena skin Id worked pretty well though.
