Changing your name...

My wedding is still a while off, but I was wondering how you go about changing your last name one you're married?  What step do you take first?  Any helpful tips or advice?

It's really not that hard. I did the social security office and then the DMV, I've heard you can do it the other way around, but the lady at the DMV specifically checked to be sure I'd already done the social security office. IDK. That part's easy.

Then just go step by step through your banks, credit cards, etc. My bank wanted to see the paperwork showing the name change (marriage license). I just went in on a saturday morning, and was done in like 10 minutes. They ordered my new debit card for me, and gave me a temp, just in case anyone checked my ID while I was shopping.

Passports are kind of a pain. If you got it within the past year (I think), you can just send in a name change thing. If it's older than that, you basically just have to pay for a renewal.

I did the DMV then SS.  Doing it that way, you have something (your temp license) with your new name right then.

Then like Manda said, you just go through each bill one by one.

I'm having more trouble than I ever thought.  My bank STILL hasn't managed to get it right 5 months later.  There are so many things that keep coming up:  life insurance, car title (still need to do), passport (have to pay for a new one), gym membership (have tried twice on that one).  People are just so incompetent.  And it seems like every week, we think of something else that has to be changed.

    I'm not gonna lie--it's a pain.

Its a simple process, it just a takes a few steps. I went to the Social Security office with my marriage license and old SS card in tow, filled out some paperwork, and was done there. I had some lag time between my trip to the SS office and the DMV, but it can all be done at once I suppose.

Everything else is just busy paperwork.
