Women in the Military in the News

I'm watching the Daily Show, and they've been showing a lot about one Presidential candidate talking about why women can't be soldiers. And more about pundits on a certain network talking about why women can't be soldiers. And I'm offended. As a woman, but also as someone who has a SO in the military and knows people, particularly men, in the military. So they really think that men in the military are such cavemen that they will either feel the need to protect the wittle wimmins, or that they are such cavemen that if women are around, the men just can't help but rape them? What decade are we in? What planet are these people on? Have they ever talked to any military men, or are they basing this on some he-man stereotype? It's not just insulting to the female members of our military, it's also insanely insulting to the male members of our military.

They were talking about a 62% increase in violent sexual offenses in the military in the last 5 years. I don't know that it's an increase in what has been happening so much as it is that women now feel safe and supported enough to report when something happens. And that's a good thing. If something like that happens to a woman, or a man who is serving our country then they should be able to report it and get all the help they need.

I just can't believe this is still a conversation that we have to have.

  • Senator Santorum shouldn't talk about things he doesn't understand. He's awfully vehement about how combat is, and how men in the military are, considering he was never in.

  • About the rape/sexual assault. My cousin works as a rape counselor and posted this great question/answer photo on Facebook the other day and it goes alo the lines of sexual assault in the military too. The persons asks "if you had a daughter to out to a party where you know there would be boys drinking, would you let her dress like a slut?" The response was something along the lines of "If the next generation of sons are as repulsed by rape as they should be, I wouldn't worry about what my daughter was wearing. If we could switch the blame from the victim to the perpetrator and recognize rape as an act of violence rather than a natural hazard, we wouldn't even notice clothing." I think that's exactly how th military should look at this. Adding women shouldnt mean that sexual violence becomes a natural hazard. Maybe instead of worrying about adding women, more education of the world be perpetrators should be done. Edit: I know women can rape men. I also know women can rape women and men can rape men. So in anything I wrote above, you are welcome to change the sex to the other sex. I don't think that the only problem is men raping women.

This.  Exactly this.  I'm also curious how many of those pundits have been in combat, or even KNOW someone who has been in combat.

Sure, it's dangerous, and there's more sexual offenses in the military (especially among deployed service members) than civilians, but women who join the military know this and take precautions whenever possible.  And I agree with DMB - I think people are speaking about it more often now, not that it's gone up significantly.

FI just told me that a majority of sexual assault cases in the military are actually male on male.

  • I just wanted to add what I've been seeing in the news in the past few weeks.

About 3200 cases of sexual assault/rape in the military were reported last year, but since it's such an underreported crime, the Pentagon estimates the actual numbers to be at 19,000, and of those, 6,000 of the victims are men. They also expect more male cases since DADT has been repealed.
