Sangria or Margarita?

Which one is healthier?  FI is taking me out and I want to have a drink (first one in well over a month).  I still don't want to have too many calories though.  So, which is a better choice?

Re: Sangria or Margarita?

  • I'd pick the sangria, it's mostly wine and fruit right?
  • I think so.  I've tried finding the calories with no success Frown
  • Just guessing, but I think Sangria would be healthier. Red wine is healthier than tequilla so there's one plus. The fruit in it can't hurt. The margarita mix I'm sure most places use has tons of sugar too. It all depends on the recipe though.

  • if it's sangria wine only then sangria, but if it's a punch then it could be a toss-up between the sangria punch and the margarita. And then again, one drink won't completely deter your diet goals. Just keep it at one drink if you can.
  • I think Sangria is better.  I've been drinking wine mixed with diet half & half (the carbonated beverage...not the milk and cream beverage).  Put some ice in a glass, fill it half way or less with wine (I prefer red) and fill the rest of the glass with diet half & half.  Cut up a slice of lime and voila!

  • I know this is probably too late, but sangria usually has other liquor, sugar, and fruit/fruit juice mixed in.  Its not just wine and fruit.
  • Personally, if you are only going to have one--I would just get your favorite!  Otherwise, you might not feel satisfied.
  • I think sangria is just a touch healthier than margaritas, but not by a lot.  My sangria recipe which is a lot like most restuarants has red wine, simple syrup (aka sugar), orange juice, triple sec, and fruit slices in it.  It's probably at least somewhat more "nutritious" than margaritas because of the fruit juice, but that's still a lot of sugar.  Pick what you like better and stick to just one!

I don't put sugar in either when I make them. Sangria has red wine, cointreau/gran marnier, and slived fruit. Margaritas have lemon juice, lime juice, cointreau and tequila. I think either is fine in moderation. BUT you have to make sure you go to a place that does them the "real" way, not with sweet and sour mix or added sugar or any of that junk.

If you're only going to have 1 its not going to throw you totally off weight.  Enjoy drinking whatever you want, don't deprive yourself because then you'll want more.  Samething w/ like eating, have whatever you want in moderation for a splurge.

  • Thanks, everyone.  I like both drinks equally.  The restaurant that we're going to doesn't really give much info as to what is in the drinks.  I'm most likely going to have only one drink.  They're probably around $10 per drink.
