Does anyone have a Moissanite e ring or wedding ring?

I love white stones but have never been a big fan of diamonds because of the inflated price tag and I've since fallen for Moissanite ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moissanite ) because of the fire in the stones. I've heard though under some lighting the stones can look gray... Does anyone have any jewelry with this stone? Do you love it or hate it?

Re: Does anyone have a Moissanite e ring or wedding ring?

  • I have a moissanite ring and I LOVE it!. All the stones in my ring are moissanite with a total ct. weight of around 2.25 and a center stone of 1.5 ct.

I too wanted to moissanite because of the price and also because of my ethical concerns surrounding diamonds. FI was a little hard to convince as he wanted to get me a diamond but after we priced out a similar ring that had a 1 ct center stone and he saw that it was about $8,000 he saw the value in moissanite.

My ring can from MoissaniteCo.com and they had stones called enhanced stones (my center stone is an enhanced stone). These enhanced stone are about $100 more a ct. An enhanced stone is a stone that goes through some extra process to help make the stone as white as possible.

My ring does not have a gray tint to it. Moissanite has come along way since it was first being created and I think the tint that some people say they have is pretty much gone now. I don't think you have much to worry about when it comes to that. As for that fire you are talking about, my ring has it. In the sun this things looks amazing!

Below is a picture of my ring and as you can see my ring does not have any kind of tint to it.

  • E rings and wedding rings should be very special and I don't believe they should have fake stones. Buy whatever you can afford but I wouldn't purchase a fake e ring.

You might fool some people with a moissanite e ring. But people who actually know about diamonds will know. And people are getting more and more educated about diamonds these days. A lot of people can't see color tints but the tint is there.

I just don't see the point in showing off a fake e ring and trying to pass it off as real. Very few people admit in real life that their ring is fake so I assume you wouldn't.

I never heard of this stone before a few days ago, when I started poking around The Knot.

Now that I've read about it, all the thoughts about diamonds have come flooding into my head.  Though our jeweler says his diamonds are not conflict diamonds and there is a sign about the Kimbery Process in the store, I'm still a little worried about the whole industry.

Of course, there's also the opportunity cost of the ring we selected...what could we have done with those thousands of dollars had we opted for one of these moissanite rings?

    Lots to think about.

Skyler's ring is so beautiful!  There's no questioning that!
  • I have moissanite earrings.  I love them.  Moissanite has more fire than diamonds.
  • OMG skyler1108 that ring is GORGEOUS!

My mom has a few Moissanite pieces, and they are all gorgeous and super sparkly -- not a hint of greyness to any of them!  It's a great choice (I would have encouraged my FH to consider it if he had not chosen a lab-created diamond through an entirely green company.. he knew I wouldn't be happy with a mined diamond!).

BTW, if you're interested in the company my FH bought my ring from, check out http://www.diamondnexuslabs.com... absolutely gorgeous and beautifully made jewelry - all real diamonds that were grown in a lab instead of dug out of the ground. :)

Actually DNL stones are not diamonds. They're CZ, not that there's anything wrong with CZ. I just have an issue with the pricing. If you read through their info pages, they tell you the elements that their stones are composed of, and it's like 7 different things; all of which are found in various forms of CZ.

Oh hey, on that same page it lists the chemical composition of their stones:
    <div>Carbon (C)</div> <div>Sulfur (S)</div> <div>Iron (Fe)</div> <div>Calcium (Ca)</div> <div>Cobalt (Co)</div> <div>Nickel (Ni)</div> <div>Yttrium (Y)</div> <div>Zirconium (Zr)</div> <div>Gadolinium (Gd)</div> <div>Hafnium (Hf)

Hm. That's odd. I could've sworn diamonds were just carbon (unless they're colored, in that case the impurities cause the coloring). Oh wait, that's right. DNL stones aren't diamonds. Also, they say that CZ is made up of just two elements (zirconium and oxygen), which is true, but usually other elements are combined to keep it stable. Common stabilizers are yttrium or calcium oxide, but vary depending on the manufacturer (which is why there are various types of CZ). So regardless of whether or not it's plain CZ (just ziconium and oxygen) or CZ with stabilizers (which is probably is), it's NOT a diamond. So thank you for playing.

  • Just because it's not a diamond pulled out of the ground, made of 100% carbon, doesn't make it a CZ.

Oh, don't worry about me. These posts aren't taking much of my time, as this is already stuff I knew.

Also, I was merely correcting your post about it being a lab grown diamond, and you got snippy and defensive. I am well aware that just because it's not a mined diamond it doesn't mean it's a CZ, except in this case it does. DNL is notorious for obfuscating their information and tricking people into thinking it's a diamond and charging an incredible mark-up on their stones. I wouldn't want someone to read this and believe that they're getting a lab grown diamond, so I corrected you.
Here's a lab report on a DNL stone:
    <a href="http://betterthandiamond.com/diamondnexuslabs/DiamondNexusLabsMaterial.pdf" rel="nofollow">http://betterthandiamond.com/diamondnexuslabs/DiamondNexusLabsMaterial.pdf</a>

Yes, it was requested by a competitor, but the lab is an independent facility that can be hired. (<a href="http://www.andersonmaterials.com/" rel="nofollow">http://www.andersonmaterials.com/</a>)

    Google is your friend.

Oh, and in case anybody is wondering, yes there are lab diamonds available, but DNL is not one of the labs to get it from. I think Apollo, Gemesis, Takara, and d.Nea are the only ones that have jewelry grade diamonds available. I think there's another company, but I can't think of it off the top of my head.
  • Look - this gemstone has essentially the same optical and physical properties as a natural diamond, but the chemistry is not the same. I get that. I was mistaken to say it's a "real" diamond, because obviously, a gemstone made in a lab is not a "real" diamond, sapphire, emerald, what have you.

I can say that DNL makes a very nice product, and I am extremely happy with what my fiance chose for me.  Their items are still a good choice for people who do not want to support the diamond industry, and/or those who do not want to spend the equivalent of a down payment on a house for a piece of jewelry (personally, I'd rather use that money to travel, but that's just me... and a feeling shared by my soon-to-be husband).

But they don't have the same physical properties at all, which is my point.

Also, a gemstone CAN be "real", even if it is grown in a lab so long as it's actually the same material/chemical composition. These stones are not diamonds at all, or even close. Just because something is pulled from the ground doesn't make it real. What it's made of is what makes it real. If you want to say that it's got the same optical and physical properties, then you can't bash CZ, because they're the same thing. The labs I listed above are all labs that grow REAL diamonds with the same physical properties and chemical composition of real diamonds.

I have no qualms with diamond simulants; my engagement ring, as well as some other jewelry I own, are sims. I just don't like the way that DNL markets their product as "lab grown diamonds" or "man-made diamonds" a la sponsored Google ads, because they're not. It's a flat out lie. Any business that makes a profit from lying is shady in my book.

If you love your ring, then that's great. You got exactly what you wanted. To me, the ring is just something sparkly to look at, and my ring does that job just fine without being a diamond. I just don't want anyone thinking that they're getting a diamond, only to find out later that it isn't.

Sorry embracejoy, but it has been proven that DNL 'diamonds' are just extremely overpriced cubic zirconia.  I'm glad that you love your ring, but I am sorry that you were scammed - you could have gotten the same thing for a lot less money.

  • Yup.  Another agreement.  DNL is NOT a moissanite or even a real, lab created diamond, such as those produced by Gemesis or Apollo.  If you would do a bit of compairson around this other than with DNL, you'd find the same info.  Glad you're happy with it, but it will start showing wear, just like a CZ after a few years.
  • The only place I've seen moissanite n a store was at Helzbergs I think but it was  really overpriced.  I didn't choose, I let my H choose for me.  If you give a woman choice, we want everything. It's better if he just hands you something.
  • I've seen a lot of reports online that DNL rings are CZ too. A lot of places that do CZ actually call it a "man-made diamond" or diamond simulant. There's nothing wrong with CZ. CZ is like diamonds in that you have high quality CZ and low quality CZ. Bottom line: it's your ring and if you love it, what else does it matter? We got my ring from b.tiff and it's high quality CZ. I LOVE it! It's stunning and the price was great. Plus it was still green but has the designer look to it. I wouldn't change a thing about it. It's still pretty hard on the Mohs scale (I think 8.5 but I'm not positive) and has incredible fire.

  • DNL is NOT a lab created diamond, it is CZ. If you love your ring that's all that matters, but don't think its an actual diamond. DNL actually doesn't even use high grade CZ.

Lab created diamonds do exist, however finding them in anything over a quarter carat is unlikely. They haven't figured out how to make them a big size while keeping a good look.

Moissanite is beautiful! If you like fire, you will LOVE IT! I wanted moissanite for a long time, but after much much reasearch I decided that I would prefer an Asha. I am not a big fan of fire and prefer more of a "steely" look.

"Asha Diamonds" are very high grade cz, with a crushed diamonds coating. This coating makes all the difference. They look identical to a high grade diamond. The second coating keeps them from ever going cloudy, and they have a lifetime guaretee. I know many people who are very, very happy with their Asha's and it's what I plan on getting! The coating does not ever wear off, because it is basically infused to the stone itself.

I was interested in finding out where to purchase moissanite online and which companies are best and I was asking skyler1108 how she knew which company to choose bc it appeared from her post that <strong>she</strong> picked out the ring online. My FI will choose my ring for me (he knows what I like and what he likes too), but I am interested in learning all that I can about moissanite. He had never heard of it and I was letting him know about it as an alternative to a diamond ring. Thanks.
  • We are getting a moissanite from moissaniteco.com I have not read one bad review at all. And the message boards with positive reviews make me feel so much better than the ones on the website. Not to say they aren't real reviews, but it's nice to see actual people and pictures praise the stone. Helzberg Diamonds have few Moissonite pieces and they are marked up, but it was nice to see them in person and boy oh boy do they have fire. The sales lady at the store said they do not yellow and are about as hard as diamonds. The pieces were the Tiffany Novo inspired, a classic cathedral setting, and one of the bigger pieces. I think it was almost equal to a 2ct.

I refuse to wear diamonds. They are overpriced and not rare at all. De Beers had the perfect scam. "Spend two months salary on a diamond" Ugh. Plus, a store can say conflict free, but diamonds pass through so many hands it's hard to tell where your diamond came from.

The customer service from moissoniteco.com has been exceptional so far. They don't pressure you to buy buy buy! They answer everything pretty quickly and are really nice about it.
When my boyfriend first start looking he wanted to get me a 1ct Leo. It was $7000!!!!!! And for what? The name!? He was so relieved when I told him I hated diamonds because he was saving up for months for The Leo. I didn't even know he was looking!

  • I got my ring from MoissaniteCo.com. I had a great experience with them and we will be getting FI ring and my wedding band from them as well. We are really happy with the service we get and the quality of my ring.
  • That's where I got my stone from too. I got one of their enhanced ones.
  • I got an enhanced stone as well. To me the enhanced stone was well worth it.

  • I have a CZ ring! shhh don't tell lol! nobody knows except me, him and my mom everyone else thinks its real! he got me a beautiful platinum setting with diamond side stones. but a center 1 carat diamond was terrifying to me, what if i lost the ring? that would have been like carrying a car on my hand ( i dont know how much he spent but it would be somthing around 12,500). so we kept the stores CZ stone and, im sure, cut the price in half. someday we may upgrade to a real stone but i LOVE my ring and everyone assumes its real anyways! maybe i'll get a moissanite stone. is it more sparkly than CZ? i do love sparkly!
  • Stardust7269, yes a moissanite is more "sparkly" than a CZ because it has more fire. Check out the link I provided, it will compare the different properties of moissanite to CZ. Just remember that moissanite is not "fake". Moissanite is its own kind of gemstone not a "fake" diamond and if you get moissanite you should be proud of you moissanite ring. Don't not try to pass if off as a diamond or look as it as a fake diamond because as I said moissanite is its own kind of gemstone.
