hotel block?

what is everyone doing for hotels? I started calling the 2 hotels we were thinking of staying at to compare prices to set up a block of rooms for our guests. but it is actually going to be more expensive for our guests versus any of the online sites like hotels.com or orbitz.com. The one hotel would actually be close  double in price because hotels.com is having a sale. The hotel block would be more convient for our guests but I don't want them to spend more money than they have to.

That was the problem I had with Mandalay Bay. The rooms are already expensive (even with a sale) and seeing we are getting married there they only offer our guests 10% off which isn't anything, so we are just letting our guests stay where they want. On our wedding website, we've included travel websites that offer great deals whether they stay on the strip or off.

  • The purpose of a room block is not to get a good rate, it is to guarantee a specific rate and a specific availability for a length of time typically ending 30 days prior to the wedding day.  If something comes to down that weekend, the hotel sells out or any number of other random things occur, a room block protects your guests and the block price is locked in.  If you tell your guests to rely on hotels.com and next thing you know some superstar decides to have a concert that weekend, next thing you know all the rooms are gone and the rate is double.  Guests who book early can use coupon codes and travel sites, guests who book late will be screwed unless you have a block, which is free, so no reason not to do it.

  • This is what is happening with my wedding weekend...Maroon 5 and The Muse are playing at Mandalay Bay; thankfully I blocked rooms for my guests at Mandalay Bay (that's where I'm getting hitched) and the Luxor....

  • Second what VG said. Our room blocks were the exact same price as what was listed on Flamingo's website when we blocked the rooms. But a lot of our guests waited until the last minute to book their rooms and by then the rooms on Flamingo's website were at $100 more for each night. If your guests are smart they will book early with hotels.com or other sites, but not everyone plans ahead.
  • Exactly.. I wonder if a lot of people will wait to book their rooms until they get the invitations... I'm talking about the people that got STD's.

We sent invites very early for that reason; and I'm glad we did, we found that our guests mostly fell into two groups, those that booked very early and used the good rates plus the 35% mandalay coupon code I had, and the rest booked a few weeks out and paid a lot more lol.

  • Thanks for tips. The hotels where I am from typically give a small discount if its a wedding or at least charge normal prices. The ones I contacted in Vegas were going to charge $100-400 more for the weekend than if I just booked directly through their site.
