Advice on traveling in Jamaica

Hi girls,

I am traveling to Jamaica on my honeymoon in 10 days.  It will be my first time traveling outside of the country and I'm seeking advice on how much cash to bring.  We're staying in an all inclusive resort so the only things I plan on purchasing down there are souveniers and excursions.  I'm getting a travel code put on my bank and credit cards so I'm thinking I can pay for excursions with my cards.  So I'm thinking the only thing I will need cash for is tips (I know you don't have to tip at all inclusive resorts but just in case there are other instances that require tips I want to be prepared) cabs, and souveniers.  I've heard that the American dollar is more appreciated when tipping and purchasing things from the market so I'm wondering about how much cash I should bring down there?  Any other advice you ladies who have traveled there before can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

  • Thats tricky b/c if you bring enough to cover 10 days you may not want to walk around w/that much cash.I say bring $300-$400 b/c worst case you can take out more and best case thats all you need. I do NOT like to have too much cash on me while traveling and don't like leaving it in hotel rooms if I'm going to the beach or just to get food...

We just got back last week from our honeymoon in Jamaica!
We stayed at Couples Tower Isle in Ocho Rios and had a wonderful time!

We used American cash, but honestly did not spend very much at all, as we stayed in an AI where tipping was not allowed. We only had to tip the airport transportation. For gifts / souvenirs we used our credit cards, and to be 100% honest with you i forgot to call my CC company to let them know we would be abroad, yet it was never an issue.

We only left the resort when traveling to / from the airport, and to go to Dunns River Falls, which we did with a tour group. I had been warned its not a great area, but I thought it was fine! I have been in parts of Mexico that were way worse! Parts of the country are very poor, but never did I have that *not safe* feeling.

Outside vendors are VERY pushy! Crafters by Dunns River Falls will not let you go 2 steps without trying to put something in your hand to buy. We had to say "no thank you, not shopping today" no less than 25 x's just walking a couple feet.

I am sure you will love it! We had the best time! Perfect weather every day & so relaxing! Be sure to report back! =)

  • We went to Jamaica.  We brought 200 dollars cash and didn't use any of it.  Everything was included and we tipped using our credit card on file at the hotel.
  • My FI and a I are planning on honeymooning in Jamaica, since we are just starting out I would love to know where you guys are staying so we can start investigating AI resorts. Thanks ladies
