How many glasses...

of wine would you drink at a wedding?

We're going to beer/wine route at our wedding and I'm just trying to figure out how many glasses to include per guest. I was figuring 3 per guest...does that seem like enough?

but I am an oddity and don't drink wine....I had a couple guests at our wedding drink two bottles worth.
  • How long is the wedding?

I'm good for 1 per hour, sometimes a little more at cocktail hours.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I'm having a cocktail hour, and then a 3 hour reception. Maybe I should do 4 per guest, although most of my guests aren't heavy drinkers, and I added in a lot who probably won't drink just to be safe.

I'm thinking 30 bottles for 75-78 POSSIBLE drinkers.

The standard calculation is 2 during cocktail hour, 1 per hour thereafter.  I'm probably right at that average.
  • There are 4 1/2 glasses in a bottle

Check evite's site for estimating consumption

I'd over-buy.  Wine doesn't go bad, and you might be able to find a retailer that will allow you to return the unused bottles for full refund.  Better to have to do that than leave your guests without adequate alcohol.
  • I'd easily drink a bottle, maybe 1 1/2, and so would fi. I'd overbuy if you can. You can NEVER have too much wine!

  • I'd probably have 2-3 glasses during dinner and then one per hour after that. I love wine.
  • We served about 25 bottles for the first two hours of our reception, and another 10 for the last two hours.  We had 100 people.

I'd go with Mica's rec and ask around for retailers that will let you return unopened bottles if you're bringing it in yourself.

Around here I can return any unopened liquor if I buy it close enough to the wedding, so I plan to overbuy and make sure my bartender doesn't just randomly open bottles.  So if that's an option for you, definitely go that route!  And then you don't have to worry about getting stuck with a bunch of bottles you'll never drink.

Edit:  Oh, and assuming everyone I invite comes I'll probably have 15 tables and will have one white and one red on each table. (So 120 people, and 30 bottles)   Most weddings here usually do that, and throughout the night there usually isn't much and then there is the bar which will have beer and hard liquor.  Maybe we drink a lot.  Lol.

  • We can't return the unused bottles after because our reception venue makes us buy the alcohol from them. Oh well! It's still better to have more than not enough.

Well, for ours, we only paid for what we opened.  So we had 50 bottles ready, but since we only opened 35, we only paid for 35.  Will your venue do that?

I THINK so...I could probably confirm this is the reception cooridinator would return any of emails or calls.

  • My venue recommended 5 drinks per person.  FIVE??? I know some who could drink more, but I'd think most could drink less.  I'm a pansy, though, usually stopping at 1.5

Are you having beer or a signature cocktail too?

  • Myself? One glass is plenty!  It makes me sleepy, so any more than that and I am under a table!

Wow, I feel like a bit of a slush now. We have 21 wedding guests and will have at least 35 bottles of wine/champagne on hand. We love good food and good wine though, so that is kind of what the theme revolves around. Our venue is not charging us anything that we don't drink though. So it's a win win. Will your venue let you take home the leftover wine?
