Musicians at ceremony - how many?

I will be having an outdoor ceremony (weather permitting - fingers crossed!), and I'm currently looking at booking violin/cello musicians.  We will have 100-125 people in a backyard of sorts at a bed & breakfast setting.  Do I need a duo or a trio?

The musicians seem to think I need a trio, but I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this.  I don't want to pay more for a trio if a duo would be sufficient since my budget is TIGHT and this wasn't in the initial plans...

I think it all depends on the sound that you are looking for. Outdoor vs. indoor probably makes a difference too. Do you like the sound of one instrument over another?
Try searching online or going to youtube to do some comparisons
of the sound between a duo/trio.
Did they give you a reason that they would suggest a trio over a duo?

The reasoning behind a trio over a duo was to have more sound volume-wise - I'm just wondering if someone has had a similar setting and a duo was enough sound for the guests all to hear it.

The other difference is that a trio can play more complicated songs than a duo, and I've heard that on different musician websites.  However, the songs I'm picking would only require a duo, but would have a more "rounded" sound with a trio.

String instruments aren't particularly loud, especially outside.  It would probably be best for you to have a trio.  Do I think a duo would be impossible to hear?  Probably not, but I would say it's better to be safe than sorry.

Funny...we just had this same debate this weekend.  We are having our wedding in a huge Catholic Church and we actually were debating a trio versus a quartet.  By the end of the weekend we decided with the quartet.  I agree with the PP's they are not very loud and I think expecially being outside you would want the trio.

    Thanks for the responses!

I think we'll go with three - like Noron said, better to be safe than sorry.
