Marley, I'm all for people having fun for any reason, but the way St. Patrick's Day is celebrated is insulting and dumb. The Irish actually never really celebrated St. Patrick's Day until the early 90's when they realized that tourists were showing up by the thousands expecting some crazy party, and those looking to turn a profit decided to take advantage of it. So it's not really an Irish holiday anymore, it's an American holiday that the Irish (and the Chinese who manufacture those green hats and green "Kiss Me I'm Irish" shirts) use to make a buck. I get that you don't have to be of a race, religion, or culture to celebrate another's festivals - heck, I'm going to an Indian festival with one of my colleagues next month and I'm so excited. But if you celebrated MLK Day by dressing in black-face and getting wasted and getting in fights and speaking in ebonics, then I think people would take offense to that, too. I choose to celebrate holidays in a way that is respectful to that culture. My Dad was born in Ireland. I'm an Irish citizen and have an Irish passport. I'm really truly Irish. There's also something referred to as "Boston Irish" which means you're decendent from people who are from Ireland, and the Boston Irish culture (which also exists in cities like Syracuse & Chicago who had big Irish immigrant populations during the Potato Famine) is much more in line with St. Patrick's Day festivities. But I don't associate that with real Ireland at all.
    Posted by calindi
I totally hear you, and you make total sense! Celebrating in a respectful way is definitely important. I guess the important distinction to make is between Irish and Irish-American. The link I posted talks more about Irish immigrants in New York celebrating their roots. There really has been a parade in NYC since 1762. However, it also says the Irish have celebrated the day as a religious holiday for about 1,000 years. Church in the morning, celebrations in the afternoon, complete with the temporary lifting of Lenten restrictions. Just not a huge party in the street, I guess!

I'm thinking that there are all kinds of ways to be Irish and all kinds of different ideas about celebrating (or not celebrating) that heritage. Same as Americans--I have a very different idea of patriotism than other Americans, but that doesn't make their views any less patriotic than mine.

I think that again, it's all in the attitude and approach. When I bring out my Irish accent, it's because I'm asked to, and I do it in a respectful way, I believe. (I just switch over to it and have whatever conversation I was already having, rather than hamming it up and talking about leprechauns.) It's pretty good, if I do say so myself. I've studied various British and American dialects as part of my theatre training and performing. I love language in general and have a knack for accents.

Marley, I get that. By saying the Irish didn't "celebrate" St. Patrick's Day, I meant they don't do what is generally associated with St. Patrick's Day. And while it's somewhat of a religious holiday, most Irish people I know don't do a whole heck of a lot even in Ireland.

i'[m asian I wore green. Its just a fun festive day. Just like I'm not Christian doesn't stop me from celebrating Easter. I like hiding candy eggs and torturing marshmallow peeps! Happy Green Day then!

EDIT: So this whole getting plastered on St. Patrick's Day issue got me thinking. Who celebrates cinco de mayo by knocking back beer, margaritas and wearing sombreros? Does that in turn mean you are insulting Hispanics? Be honest now. I don't drink so its just another day for me. Sorry Jenjen for thread jacking I just got to thinking you know.

Lyn, that's exactly what I was going to point out.

Cinco de Mayo really isn't celebrated around here. I don't think we have a large enough Hispanic population for it to be popular. But we sure do celebrate Canada Day.... ;)

I do know several Mexicans who are insulted by how Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Not Mexican-Americans, genuine Mexicans living in Mexico. They think we're stupid and juvenile for how we'll take any small cultural holiday and turn it into an excuse for a drunken orgy. It doesn't reflect well on us. Cinco de Mayo is only celebrated in one small part of Mexico, it's not a general Mexican holiday. We misinterpret it as Mexican's Independence Day, but that's not it at all. Honestly, it just makes us look ignorant for falsely celebrating another country's holiday in the view of the world.

Like I said, you want an excuse to party, fine. But falsely tying it to another culture just is insulting and ignorant.

I'm wearing green today, and I hope to get to do some kind of celebrating tonight... but as I live in Italy and it's not a huge holiday here, I'm pretty sure the celebration won't be like what we have in the US.

Also, today is the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, which is a much bigger deal here. I already celebrated that with an enormous Italian lunch. For sure there are going to be tons of parties tonight, just not celebrating St. Patrick's Day. I can pretend though, right?

Go ahead and Wikipedia it. Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in one state in Mexico, and by Americans.

I didn't say every single Mexican is insulted by it - I said I do know some Mexicans who have commented that Americans are "a bunch of animals who will use any excuse to get drunk." That was an awkward business conversation.

See, I think it all has to do with the making the distinction between Mexican and Mexican-American. They're related, but not the same culture. Maybe one parties harder than the other. Nothing wrong with either approach, as long as no one is getting hurt.

That seems to me to be as poor a generalization as assuming that all Mexicans celebrate Cinco de Mayo to get drunk.

St. Patrick's Day here definitely isn't the same thing as it is in Ireland. That's valid. But I think that going crazy, doing dumb things and just getting stupid drunk reflects poorly on the people who do that, not the Irish in general. But I don't like to generalize, so maybe that's just me.

I think Lyn's point about Easter was probably a really good one as well regarding this idea of holiday interpretations.

Your right, its not about being Irish, its about being an Irish American and celebrating that. My family came over during the potato famine (or that half did) and I"m an Irish (and Polish and Jewish and mixed) American. I'm proud of the history of Irish Americans, and that is what St. Patty's day is about.

People do some stupid things for it, yes, they also do on Halloween. People are just stupid.

I'm visiting my best friend. Her roommate is Irish and her BF is Irish. Irish, as in just came to America only a few years ago and still have an accent. Their family invited us over for dinner. We're having corn beef and cabbage and then "going to celebrate with drinks." Their words, not mine. I suppose if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

In other news, I'm in Chicago and dying to see this green river everyone talks about, but I have to wait for my friend to get off of work Frown
In other news, I'm in Chicago and dying to see this green river everyone talks about, but I have to wait for my friend to get off of work

I don't really own green, but I wore a sweater with some green in the pattern today, and I have my Ireland t-shirt (that gets worn exactly once a year) packed for dance class tonight.

I'm half Irish and totally don't look it. My mom has the dark hair, blue-green eyes and fair skin, though.

Regarding Cinco de Mayo...it's huge here. It was a day off school for us. I know it's not a big holiday in Mexico, but in the Bay Area, it's basically Mexican pride day. I usually stay far away from downtown San Jose the whole weekend close to it.
