Fishy

Nouns sometimes do function as adjectives.

Sometimes words that are usually nouns can function as adjectives. This happens when the “noun” is used to define a noun.

And that concludes the grammar lesson for today. ;)

Another random thought:  I really don't like Chick-fil-A.  It's no good.

Re: Fishy

  • In the phrase, YOURE AN IDIOT. Idiot is, indeed, not an adjective.

Your rants are idiotic. Yes. Idiotic serves and an adjective.

  • If you say, Sue is an idiot.  Sue is the noun and idiot is the describing word, so yes, it can be an adjective.

A lot of the rants on this board are idiotic. Tru dat.
  • No, haven't tried the breakfast mini's.  I'm really conflicted over Chick-fil-A.  It's supposed to be good and everyone raves, but I just can't get behind it.

FI is there now - I passed.  Now, I have to figure what to eat for dinner.
  • Idiot is NEVER an adjective.  check www.dictionary.com, see for yourself.

    Idiotic, yes,  that's an adjective.

Honestly, coffer, you of all people have serious nerve giving out grammar lessons.

    Let me help you.

A noun acting as an adjective would be like ticket + office or race + horse.  See how both words are used? No one says idiot + person.

"You are an idiot" does not include a noun + another noun acting as an adjective.

This concludes YOUR lesson for today.
  • Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French ydiote, from Latin idiota ignorant person, from Greek idiōtēs one in a private station, layman, ignorant person, from idios one's own, private; akin to Latin suus one's own — more at suicide
    Date: 14th century

1usually offensive : a person affected with extreme mental retardation
    2 : a foolish or stupid person

    idiot adjective

    From Webster's.

  • Wow... really?

Coffer, if you need to have an argument about grammar, you need to pull your head out of your azz.  Anyone else would have rolled their eyes and let something tiiiiiny like this, go.  But nope!  Not you!  Gotta be right!

    Get a grip.
  • COFFER!! GET IT TOGETHER.

You can say IDIOT + DRIVER then IDIOT is acting as an adjective of DRIVER.

What about this do you NOT get?  The word idiot, alone, in a sentence, is not, cannot be, an adjective.  PERIOD.
  • I'm together.  I'll beg to differ.

  • (NO I am not Piper)
    image
  • and that makes you an idiot.
  • Andrea, that really proves nothing.  When the word idiot is used it can be used twofold: to describe someone or to call someone an idiot.  Check the first source you listed on dictionary.com, it states the same thing as Webster's.
  • Did someone smack you with an idiot-stick growing up?

  • Anybody got a dead horse?  Anyone?

No.  No idiot sticks for me.  Now I'm confused is the idiot a stick or is the stick the idiot.
  • I should not have said you are an idiot, apologies.

I should have said you're being ridiculous.  I don't know how you actually get along in life without ever allowing for the possibility that you're wrong.

Dude, dead horses are a biitch to ride.
  • Actually, if you want to get into it, the presence of the hyphen joining the two words makes stick a noun and idiot a descriptive noun, I believe. Neither of which will help you in getting out of the black hole of idiocy you're currently stuck in, however.

  • Andrea, I never said that I couldn't be wrong, I just said I begged to differ. I'll admit when I'm wrong, no problems with that.  I just have a difference of opinion.

It's cool, though.  It's all good.

  • Damn, I missed the hyphen.  When I read it I didn't see it.  I stand corrected.
  • Um, grammar can not be based on opinion.  There's no such thing as deciding something is gramatically correct because it is your opinion that it is.

It is my opinion that that was a run on sentence.

Sure, it's possible.  If there's evidence supporting both arguments, you can have an opinion about which one you think is correct (or more correct).

I guess I'm the only one who think Chick-fil-A is overrated.  Les, deleted her post and left me to having a conversation about chicken mini's with myself.
  • The only thing worth eating there is the grilled chicken sandwich and their fruit cup.

  • My apologies, Capri, for deleting my single post.  I realized I stepped into way more crap than I was willing to deal with at the time.  I am the idiot here.  (Noun).

WTF with all the grief over grammar?  Why crawl up Capri's butt over it?  I guess I missed something big this week, since I can't Knot at work very much anymore and haven't seen a lot of the posts in the past couple of weeks - checking in late at night when all the threads are dead isn't fun.

We can use the word 'fucker' in the new format, yet we're here having a debate over potential usage of the term 'idiot'?

Personally, I vote that we save the grammar scrutiny for the big guns!

  • Um, Les? If you'll notice, Capri got all over me about it. She brought it on, and she was wrong and still couldn't admit it. So don't go all being POOR COFFER because she started this thread and hence must deal with the fallout.

  • Can I just say that SOMEONE should've come out of this thread smarter.

It's really quite sad that no one did.
