Need Advise on Losing Weight w/o Gym

Hey all,

My fiance and I both quit our gym membership to save money for the wedding and it's COLD to run n i need some motivation on how to work out at home w/o getting bored of the same workout videos. I've started by doing ab workouts and trying 2 bundle up and run outside, but the only way i get motivated is in the spring and summer! HELP!

Re: Need Advise on Losing Weight w/o Gym

  • I prefer doing yoga when I'm at home.

I will tell you what one of the trainers at my gym told me: you can only do so much working out.  It's what you eat that counts the most towards weight loss.

  • Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred DVD totally kicks my butt. I couldn't bend my legs for 2 days!
  • If you have a local indoor shopping mall check to see if they have a walking program. In my town our mall has a FREE program where you can come and walk the in side perimeter of the mall before the mall opens (or while it is open). It is climate controlled, has 24hr security so it is safe and one lap is a half mile. Most likely you wont be able to run, but you could most likely get a good power walk going. Also, if you are very careful and do not get caught by security you could use the escalators as a stairmaster. LOL
  • Instead of buying one or two videos and getting bored with them, see if your local library has any.  It's a free way to either try out videos before buying them, or for changing up your workout on a regular basis.  The same goes for netflix, both instant view and dvds (assuming you have a netflix account).

  • My advice: Go get your gym membership back. Weddings cost a lot of money, but it's only one day. Your health is your whole life. If you are the type of person who is more apt to work out at the gym, then set yourself up for success and stick with a gym membership. I'm not saying you can't be healthy without one (there are of course plenty of healthy people out there without one), just to really evaluate your own personality and what you are really most likely to do. Besides, seeing that money leave your bank account every month, while you are trying to save for your big day, can be a HUGE motivator to make sure you actually get to the gym.

At home: I enjoy doing yoga at home in my own space. Also, depending on your cable service provider, most cable services have some sort of "On Demand" feature, where you can access some different fitness channels and get at-home workouts there. You could also DVR if you have that feature. Good Luck!
  • I have Bob Harper DVDS, P90x and Insanity and you can do them all at home... And I have seen great results and have keep the weight off for about 6yrs now.

I've quit the gym because I've gotten much better results using the DVDs at home- P90X, Insanity, 10 Minute Trainer, etc.  My group of "friends" keep me motivated and helped me drop 5 sizes, so it is possible to stick with an at home program.  There are so many options out there, so just search around for what works for you.
  • You can also check out youtube videos. One in particular that I just started on is http://www.youtube.com/user/genghisgirl?feature=digest_sat
She is upbeat, and has 4 kids... so if she can do it, so can I. She does new workouts every wednesday and uploads them. Just about all of her videos do not use equipment at all, so you can start anytime, anywhere.
