Losing weight and alterations...

I had my third child a year ago. I am pretty much where I was before I had her. Although, I still want to lose more weight. I just found my dress (yay me!) but i am hesitant to buy it because I am worried about what will happen if I do lose weight.

I don't know anything about alterations and how much smaller they can make a dress. I do know that you are supposed to buy the dress to fit. Because it's a lot easier to take in a dress. So, I am not insane.. I am not going to buy it too small and hope I can squeeze into it. I definitely want to lose more weight but if I can't then oh well.

What happens if I happen to drop a size or two after I've already purchased the dress? Can they actually take it in that much? I am kind of paranoid about this. If you have knowledge about this please share!

Thank you in advance!! :)

  • Usually a dress can be taken in about 2 sizes, sometimes 3 depending on the details.  Keep in mind that it takes about 20 pounds to change dress sizes so if you were do lose 20 pounds you would really just need it to be taken in about a size. Losing more than 40 pounds would be a little risky.

  • Oh wow! I don't think I would want to lose that much anyways! You made me feel a lot better about this! Now I can try to lose more weight without freaking out! I don't think I had ever been scared to lose weight before. :)
  • I'm having issues with my weight and my gown and went to the alterations department for help.  They said the seams in dresses are usually really large and they can let a dress out considerably.  My advice would be to ask the alterations department on what would work best (buy one size smaller and possibly have to let it out or buy to fit and possibly have to take it in) to see what the best option for the gown you pick is.

  • I would buy the size recommended after measuring you.  Even if the one you tried on fit you, it was probably stretched out from people trying them on.  They don't always tell you that in the store.  If you are bordering between 2 sizes, then thats the only time I would say go with the smaller one if you really think you will lost more weight.

As for our alterations, as PP said it depends on how much detail you have on the dress.  If its a lot of beading and boning it gets difficult, but you should at least be able to go in a size or 2.

  • Buy the dress that fits you now based on your measurments.  They usually have to always take it in somewhere (in my case - the bust - sigh), but taking it in is much less of a hassle than letting it out.

  • I'm also dealing with the same situation, and I was between two sizes. I went the size up because it is always better to have to take in than to have to let out. Sometimes there just isnt enough fabric to let it out and still have sturdy construction. Trust me, I do alterations and fashion design. Always go bigger and take it it. Its like 15-20 lbs per dress size, and like the girl before said, you can take it in up to 2 sizes (maybe more depending on style, fabrice, etc.)

    Good luck!
