Wedding Woes

Nixing a Videographer in lieu of Flip Cams? Help.

So please tell me if this is tacky?  My FI seems to think it's the best idea since sliced bread....

Let me start out by saying I hate wedding videographers that interview guests, try and drag them on the dancefloor, prompt the wedding party & B&G to perform, etc.

However, my Mom loves it. She says it's mandatory.

My FI and I have been throwing around the idea of getting 4-6 flip cams and giving them to several individuals to play with, and them mashing the good footage up at the end.

We have a lot of artistic friends, and think maybe this could give us a real, fun, unobtrusive documentary of our wedding.  I am having trouble rationalizing the money spent on videography when I really don't even care for wedding videography in general. I'd rather take that money and do something WAY more fun with it.

Thoughts??

This is the modern equivalent of disposable cameras on the tables. It's not going to turn out well.

My mom was the opposite of yours and decided she could just ask a few people with video cameras to take some footage. We ended up with zero useable footage.

Just hire a videographer and tell them you want them to be unobtrusive. I've never been to a wedding where the videographer interviewed the guests.

You need to have very low expectations.

Why not hire the videographer to just film the wedding and not the reception and your guest can have at it at the reception?

If your Mom wants to pay for a videographer, I say go for it. You'll want PRO footage when you get old and want to remember your non-wrinkled, saggy self. Wink

Just like photography, if you are going to do it, do it right. Hire a PRO. Look at differnet videographers and view their sample tapes. Hire the one that best suits your likes and needs.

So, you are going to make your friend WORK at your wedding? And you realize if you do this, all 4 - 6 people are going to be filming the exact same events - cake cutting, first dance, etc.

Isn't your family paying for the wedding. If so, if mom is paying - she gets to decide what to pay for.

Seriously. What is up with you?

I think interviewing guests/ wedding party was a thing of the 90's...but my Mom seems to think that it is SO FUN.  The thought makes me cringe.

I think maybe just hiring one for the ceremony and a little bit of the reception may be the way to go.  It would be nice to have footage of our vows, toasts, etc.

Yikes!  The reason I posted at all was because I was having those reservations as my FI and I were talking about it last night....not wanting to burden our guests with filming our wedding.

And yes, my family is paying for a lot of my wedding....it is tradition in our family and my parents are thrilled to do it.  But why would I not want to save my parents money if I can?  Just because they are paying doesn't mean I am going to try and bankrupt them. Sheesh.

Enough with the personal attacks already, MinM.  I'm just asking a simple question.

Plural? Before I was offering sound advice. This is the first time I have outwardly stated the obvious.

Anyway,  Thanks to all of those who gave responses.  I'm crossing off flip cams, and will have to make FI see the light.  Cool
