Do You Exercise?

Sadly, I've gained about 10 pounds since the wedding.  Lately I've been lazy partly because of my ankle injury but before I hurt myself I was on the treadmill 4-5 times a week and occasionally lifted weights.  Tonight I actually went to the gym and did 30 minutes on the elliptical and 20 minutes on the stationery bike.  I'm trying to get back into it.

So I'm wondering who else exercises, how often and what do you do?

Do you have any goals (fitness, weight loss, etc.)?

My goal - I'd like to lose the 10 pounds that I've gained in the last year and a half by the end of October (that's a pound a week).  Wish me luck!

I do exercise. I am a runner. I used to hate running but since I joined Weight Watchers 4 1/2 years ago, I have learned to love running. I love the WW program for losing weight. I lost 65 lbs and have kept if off for a little over 4 years.

ugh, i don't but i should to stay fit. i sometimes like to run with DH but i also learned i like pilates, but i'm not sure what that would do for weight loss though. ooh and i love dancing. i've been thinking about getting an aerobic dance dvd or something, at least to make things fun although i'm sure i'd feel ridiculous doing that ;)

I did intervals before I hurt my ankle but I can't run yet. Actually I occasionally ran a couple of miles in about a 9-10 minute mile.  But right now running is painful.  I thought the elliptical would be low impact enough to ease me back into running.

I do circuit training every Sunday and I ride my bike.  Actually, that's one of the things H and I really enjoy doing together.  I also used to do Zumba but quit for some reason.  Recently I found out that a friend of mine is going to the same classes I used to go to, so I'm going to start again when the new session starts, so end of September I think.  I also am going to try couch to 5k.  I *hate* running, but if I have a goal I can make myself do it.  C25k is 9 weeks, so I need to look for a 5k for some time after that and sign myself up.

I have a lot of weight to lose, but I don't know if it's actually possible.  I have Hashimoto's disease, which is a form of hypothyroidism, and that has a lot to do with a person's ability to lose weight.  My liver and kidneys are too efficient and clear the medication out of my system too fast, so thus far it's been impossible to regulay my thyroid.  Even so, I could get lower than I am right now if I'd just put my mind to it.

Anyone want to be my accountability partner?

well my POV on exercise is sort of "weird", basically exercise is a relatively new thing because people have started to work indoors and started to live a sedentary lifestyle so people aren't outside that much anymore like they use to be hence why people exercise now. I don't really think exercise is a natural thing, especially when people run for so long. I use to run all the time, even half marathons, and then I started to have knee problems. Now I walk almost everyday. We are humans and we are made for walking, that is how I look at it. I think a good walk everyday is all you really need, it is mainly the food you eat, honestly eating is about 85% of how people can lose weight. PHEW that was a long post.

<div>I don't think your POV is weird at all.  IN fact, H and I have discussed this many times.  One of our favorite shows is Little House on the Prairie and we frequently remark about how people from that time period would laugh at all of us weirdos who sit to work all day and then drive to a gym so we can exercise.  I wish I had a job that provided me with more opportunities to get my heart rate up while at work, but I can't think off to many aerobic or even anaerobic opportunities when teaching!</div><div>
</div><div>H and I do try to replace things with more strenous methods when possible.  For instance, walking or biking instead of driving when possible, things like that.</div>

My workout routine has been SO off since the wedding and honeymoon, but I am trying to get back into it. Once the school year starts (I'm a teacher), I'll be back in the routine. Usually my week is: Zumba on Mondays. Weights and a little cardio on Tuesday at the gym. Used to do Zumba on Wednesdays, but now I have practice for the Christian band I joined on Wed, so I will prob just go for a quick walk Wednesdays or do a dance exercise DVD I have at my house. Thursday is the weights and cardio at the gym again. Friday, Saturday and Sunday I don;t have a set thing I do. Some weeks I work out those days, most weeks I don't haha. So yea, once my routine is back, I'll be working out 4 days a week at least. Zumba is my fave!

kcadonau- don't feel silly doing a dance aerobic DVD! I do them and they are so fun! I don't know what style of dance you like, but you should try a Zumba class. It is so much fun and you won't even know you're "working out".

<div>I wish my job were closer so I could bike to work, or later in the day so I could leave later.  I work 15 miles from home, but it's a pretty straight shot on a dedicated bike path.  If I didn't have to be there so flippin' early I would totally bike to work, but having to be at work by 7 means I'd have to leave by 5:30 at the latest - yuck!  I might try it on a day that we don't have to be at work super early though, just to see how bad it is, ie how sweaty I am when I get there!</div>

I gained 30 pounds my first year of college. It was awful. I was miserable and ate and ate and ate.

Thankfully, I'm 5'10" and you really can't tell that I've gained. That said, I HATE the extra pounds. I'm used to being about 145, in shape, and healthy.

I need to get my butt moving. I just ordered Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred DVD and can't wait til it arrives.

I'd really love to lose these 30 pounds and thankfully, I have over a year til the wedding so I know I can do it!

Good luck to all those with exercising goals!

I excercise very regularly as it's important to me to be healthy and looking and feeling great about myself and for my husband. I have a gym membership and go there a few times a week and use the ellipitcal and/or go to spin classes. I also work out at home using Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred DVD that is amazing! After using it the first few times, you'll have muscles hurting that you didn't know existed, but it's really an amazing workout and does wonders for your body.

We also go to the beach a lot and play frisbee, soccer, and swim laps at the pool, take the dog for walks, etc... all contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

we do lots of things in lieu of exercise, or we try to mix it up.  in the winter I'll be on the treadmill a lot since it'll be cold and icy outside.  last night we did a 20 minute kickboxing video.. it kicked our butts!  DH runs almost every morning and we also try to walk in the evenings.  I cook healthy/healthy-ish meals and try to keep sweets to a minimum.

we've both gained stress weight from the engagement, so we're hoping it'll come off naturally and quickly.  for me, it's only 5 lbs or less.  for DH it's quite a bit more...  his last semester of college he worked about 60-70 hrs a week plus took evening classes, helped planned the wedding, did his minister's duties at church...  so he gained about 20-25 lbs from eating junk everyday and not running at all.  poor guy.  he's having trouble getting it off.  :(

    wish us luck!

Went went through an exercise phase.  I got peer pressured into doing the couch to 5k program.  I ended up being the only one of the group to finish.  Once I was able to do the 5k I stopped because I hated running.

I like to play DDR, but I haven't since we moved b/c I don't know what input it has to be etc, to make it work.

My exercise now is pretty much everyday life.  I walk to the women's group at church.  Walk the dog.

joesgirl, what about swimming?  It won't put pressure on your ankles.

i have it!!!! (: it is pretty amazing!!! i wasnt very faithful... but i could tell a difference.

When FI went to school and we were doing long distance i started going to the gym like 4 times a week. i lost a LOT of weight. i am short (almost 5'3) and last summer i was just about 15 pounds heavier. I hit a goal for when FI got home in may and actually exceeded the goal and lost 5 more pounds then my goal! (:

Since FI has been home... i stopped working out altogether. lol. Kinda silly since my wedding day was approaching... but i was like "yes! i hit my goal... i am good!" i felt like i had gained my weight back... but when i checked my weight yesterday.... i was the same! hooray!!

i HATE excercising! a lot! i was a cheerleader all throughout high school ... so i like dance and zumba type stuff. i need an instructer telling me to keep going. hehe.

FI doesn't exercise but is built well. He works outside doing asphalt maintenance so he doesn't really need to since his work is soo intense. He works for 2 months and gets all cut! makes me mad! lol

I try to make it to the gym.  I think classes are more motivating than just running on the treadmill or doing the elliptical or weights.  I like kickboxing and step classes.  I haven't tried zumba, but I want to!

I could walk to work since I can almost see it from my apartment, but  cars don't look out for pedestrians around here.  I walked to work a few times when it was cooler (yeah no thanks when it's 110 outside...), but I almost got hit twice crossing the street.  So...I make my 2 minute commute every morning.  :)

I've been trying to walk about 30 min. 5x/week since I started work. After a couple years of working, I had constant, very mild, but constant back pain I knew was from carrying my heavy briefcase and spending 12-hour days hunched over office furniture designed for someone 10 inches taller and 50 pounds heavier.

It took several months to get up the courage to go in for a physical, then a few more months to research gyms, but now I go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week. I try to do 2 hours of yoga/pilates a week. I have a routine with the free weights, and I use the weight-lifting machines.

I share a membership with my future husband, who's something of a gym rat, so he showed me how to use all that scary equipment. I also get tips from Women's Health magazine.

My gym membership comes with 3 hours of personal training. That's my next step. To have a few sessions with a trainer to make sure my technique is good and start doing some cardio.

What I like about the gym is there's no winning/losing or pretending it's supposed to be fun. I'm not very coordinated, and gym CLASS in school was always awful.

To have a few sessions with a trainer to make sure my technique is good and start doing some cardio. <strong>What I like about the gym is there's no winning/losing or pretending it's supposed to be fun.</strong> I'm not very coordinated, and gym CLASS in school was always awful.

<div>That's what I hate about it!  I need the competition to motivate me.  If there's no winner, I don't generally care to participate :-P</div>

I don't love running, but I love the feeling of having run and I like running in road races.  I've done 5K, 8K and three half marathons.  I'm working toward a full marathon in November for the first time, and after that we're planning to begin TTC.  (H and I both turn 30 at the end of the winter, so I'd like to be able to check that marathon off the bucket list!)

I'm at a healthy weight right now, and H is rather overweight although he's quite active, he eats well and he's a teacher so that means he's on his feet most of the day at work.  So much of it is hereditary, too- no one in my family is overweight, but his family tend to be large-boned and muscular even though they're Chinese (who tend to be smaller than your average European-descended Caucasians).

We have a gym membership and go 3x a week. We also work with a trainer 2x a week each.  It takes so much to get in shape, and to stay there! We really make the effort, and we cook most of our meals using loads of fresh veggies but it's an uphill battle, it seems.

DramaGeek, the great thing about being an adult is now I know it's OK that I like the gym my way, with counting (reps) and adding (weights) and no winners or losers or games, but you like exercise your way, and that's OK, too. In school, I always felt funny that the "games" weren't fun for me.

Elisabeth, good point.  Everyone can do it their own way.  I just wish there were more options for competitive activities as an adult.  It's hard for me to find things I like.
