Wedding Invitations & Paper

when do you mail std's and invites to overseas guests?

sorry, i'm sure this has been asked before but i've been looking and can't find it.

we have family in europe and some friends living overseas.  i know many of them already know our wedding date but some do not.  i'm definitely not expecting people to travel, but our families are pretty close knit so they actually might.

should i mail their std's and invites earlier than everyone else's, to give them adequate time in case they want to come?  should i wait until the standard timeframe?  or should i mail everyone's out a little earlier, but all at once?

we're not sending things out just yet - i just have some time on my hands now and i'd like to get as much of this prepped and ready to go as possible.  that way when it's time, i can just drop them off at the post office.  :)

thanks for your advice and hope everyone's planning is going well!

Re: when do you mail std's and invites to overseas guests?

  • All of my family and bridal party live overseas, and I mailed out my STDs about 6.5 months in advance. We just went ahead and scouted out all of our hotel and travel options (stuff that traditionally would go in an invite) and put them up on our website so that people could begin planning. The point of the STD is to help everyone plan ahead, so you shouldn't have to send out your invites too much earlier. I'm putting mine in the mail about 10 weeks in advance, which is normally too early, because some of them will take 2-3 weeks to reach their destinations (and I've also got personalized favors that need to be ordered in advance). 6-8 weeks, though, is the norm--you should be fine with that, especially if you've sent out STDs.

  • I agree - we sent out STD to our overseas guests at the same time as US which was about 7 months out. They have all visited my website or called, they've already let me know they are coming.  Actually, I think some of them thought that was the invite!  I'm planning on sending all invites at the same time around 8 weeks.  The postal service is much faster than it used to be and I was suprised at how quickly the STD's got there.
  • Same here.  STDs about 5-6 months out.  That's all the time we had.  We planned this fast.  We included all the travel and accommodation information (mine is a DW) and website info so that people could plan.  I plan on sending my invites out at 8 weeks and the ones to Europe at 9 weeks.  Mail usually takes about a week.  And, surprisingly several are coming.  Yay!

I think my guests thought that the STD was the invite too.
