Wedding Woes

the night before the wedding

I know its tradition for the bride and groom to not sleep in the same house the night before the wedding but does it really meen anything? We been together for 7 years and we lived together for 6 years. I was thinking about sleeping at my parents house that night but the more i thought about it I want to sleep in my own comfy bed. I told my maid of honor and she said Im not suppose to sleep in the same house and i have to do some stuff traditionaly. but then not an hour later when we were in the hair salon and there was someone with blue hair and i was joking that i was going to dye my hair blue for the wedding she said its your wedding you can do whatever you want. ok so it my wedding and can do whatever i want but i cant sleep at home the night before the wedding? that made a lot of scence.

We're sleeping in our own bed and our own house the night before the wedding. I don't understand that tradition at all.

  • Don't feel that you need to follow old fashioned rules or expectations about weddings. If you and your FI want to stay at your home the night before then you go right ahead and do it!
  • Sleep in the place where you will get the best night's sleep.  For me, that was right next to my FI in our house.  Oh, and I'm a MOB!

To the bolded: Why? What does it matter to her?

My DH and I slept in our own bed together the night before the wedding.  By that point we had known each other 5 years, lived together for 2.  It just seemed stupid to stay somewhere else.

It is your wedding and you can do whatever you want.  If you dye your hair blue, you have to post a pic here, though.  :)

I don't understand what it matters if it isn't something you want to do.
  • Do you want YOU want.  If our wedding hadn't been in our hometown and we lived over 6 hours away, I would have preferred to sleep in my own bed with DH that night.

  • Is this really a thing?  We went to bed like we always did, same bed.
  • DH and I didn't spend the night before our wedding together.  He stayed at my IL's after he, his dad, and his brother went out for drinks after the RD.  BIL lives OOT and DH wanted to get to spend extra time with him since he knew that his time with BIL was going to be limited with wedding stuff going on.

I stayed at my house with my bridesmaids (I offered, but didn't force anyone into it) and then we all went to the salon together in the morning.

It wasn't about being 'tradtional', it's just kind of the plan that evolved.
  • Do what you'd like to do, but I echo the PP's advice on getting the best sleep you can the night before.  If that's in bed next to FI, then sleep there!  That's what I plan to do.

I stayed in the hotel, but mostly because I didn't really care where I slept, and my mother did. It also let me spend more time with family in from OOT. And, at the time, I was kindof into the whole "big reveal" where the ceremony would be the first time he saw me that day. Waking up together = his seeing me that day, even if I wasn't all bride-ed up.

Looking back, I might do it differently. But really, traditions are good as much as they are useful to YOU (and him). Otherwise? Toss 'em freely.

we didn't spend the night together, because i stayed with OOT guests with family elsewhere. but if i ever get to go back in time, i'd have stayed in a hotel. or, let H stay at a hotel and i stay at home. it was more fun for us that way. this doesn't make it more fun for anyone else, and it would only have stressed me out to be told i had to do somehting that i didn't want to do for no real reason.
  • i stayed at my ILs' house for the 2 nights before the wedding. It was moreso to cut out the 45 minutes of travel from where H and I lived at the time. (I had early appointments near the IL's and the wedding was on their side of town). I would have rather have stayed in my bed with H.

You screwed up the tradition of being a virgin on your wedding night when you started to live in sin with your FI. You could try to revirginize yourself and then sleep someplace else to really keep with tradition. Then your white wedding dress will make sense and not look like a whore in virgin Mary clothes.

Why would I tell someone else that they are living in sin, when I have a baby and live with FI already? Try harder and get a life you phony!
  • We stayed at a hotel that was closer to our venue than our apartment was. My OOT aunt stayed there as well, and in the morning, I got up and went to her room to get ready and my husband and his groomswoman and her partner got ready in our room.

Also, I wanted to mention that I don't consider myself a whore because I don't follow what other people traditionally do. If I cared what other people thought, I'd probably have forced my awesome FI to have a city hall wedding. Instead, we're planning a real wedding and I cannot WAIT to share my ideas! I think I want an ivory dress! But the reality is I DO have a child so we'll probably sleep in the same bed the night before. At least I am not delusional to think I am still pure. I sure as hell am not, no where on me is! That's funny.
