what is your dream proposal?

I've been posting intermittently on this board and I would like to get to know you all better and thought this may be fun :)

what would be your dream proposal (realistically) or unrealistically (if travel, money, etc. were not factors).

I don't try to think about a dream proposal. I've told BF that I would like for it to be a big, romantic gesture. I don't want my family or friends there, I would rather it be a private moment for the two of us. I want it to be obvious he put a lot of thought and planning into it. How he proposes and how much effort he puts in is important to me. I will be happy no matter what he does but I know he knows I would be disappointed if he didn't do something to try and make it really special.

I always wanted to get engaged at Cinderella's Wishing Well at Disney World because I'm a Disney freak like that. It's in a place that's off the beaten path, so a Disney proposal without the crowds. :)

But now I'm just more interested to see what BF actually comes up with.

I would like an engagement pony. After we eat engagement chicken. Then we will ride off into the sunset on said engagement pony and live happily ever after.

But, in all seriousness, I loved how FI proposed. I can't think of a better way. He wrote me a poem, cut up all the lines of the poem, and unwrapped dove chocolates and put the poem lines inside and rewrapped them. Throughout the day he kept giving me the pieces and having me try to arrange them. After a nice dinner at the place we had our first dinner date, we went to our park, and he gave me my christmas present. It was a big box of chocolates, with three more of the dove chocolates inside. Those had the last three pieces of the poem on them, and one was blank. Then we went to a park that we had our first kiss at and spent many summer  nights with each other. He pulled out his wallet which had the last piece of the poem on it which asked if he'd marry me. Then we kissed and I jumped him.  The end. :)

I defintely want something private, just us.  I would love for it to be on the eiffel tower, probably a bit cliche. I know that's not private and a bit of contradiction to what I just said, but I would hope he didn't do it front of family or friends, strangers being around I don't mind so much.  I love Paris I haven't been in almost 3 year now and miss it dreadfully.  I would be so happy to have that moment with my BF I really wouldn't care.  He is very thoughtful and sensitive, so however he did it would be fine by me.  Here's to hoping all of us get our dream proposals soon :-0

I want something private and simple. I would be petrified if he asked me in front of a bunch of family - i am super self conscious (that of course would not stop me from saying yes!! lol). I would love for it to be sort of natural and not too terribly over the top, because that's just the sort of people we are. We go on a lot of bike rides/walks, I think it would be super sweet and absolutely perfect if he would do it on an occasion like that.

also, i am gonna do real bad at a wedding if i am embarrassed to even be proposed to, lol. I am still trying to convince him we should elope. haha. which that will never happen

My dream proposal is a big, over-the-top proposal. Something along the lines of bringing me on the court at a basketball game. But knowing my BF, it's really not his style, and would make him REALLY uncomfortable. Realistically, I'd like someone to take a picture or video of him asking me, that's really all I want, other than him down on one knee asking for my hand in marriage!

I personally think it's a bad idea to be thinking about an "ideal" or "dream" proposal.

First b/c you can easily slip from being in the present moment to fantasizing about and living for a future moment. I'm always a proponent of being present in THIS moment and not being so busy looking for the next big moment that you don't live in and enjoy your life as it happens.

Second, b/c building it up too much in your mind can lead to disappointment.

I think it's much healthier to focus on other things and let it happen how it happens.

I agree desert, especially because we in no way want to make our guys feel bad if we've worked up something in our head and they don't quite "meet up" to what we've been dreaming of. I am sure that most guys really do put a lot of thought into a proposal and have their own reasons for doing whatever it is they decide to do

Even if my BF proposes to me in front of all our family and friends I'll be thrilled and I'll know that this is the way that he wanted to do it. What we want may not be what they want, and this is pretty big for them too.

*This however does not mean at all that I think it's ok to put zero thought into a proposal, just sayin : )

Well, I wouldn't have dreamed of having FI propose when I walked butt naked out of the shower, but that's how it went down.  It was sweet, and heartfelt, and the fact that he totally caught me by total surprise was actually a surprise in and of itself since I knew he had bought the ring.  And I didn't react at all how I thought I would since I was so taken by surprise!  I shouted, "For serious!?" and then proceeded to start shaking all over and crying, and then I started laughing and couldn't stop.

If I could have picked any proposal, I would have had him surprise me by flying me back to Costa Rica where we went on our first vacation together and proposing at the same beachfront restaurant on a deserted beach at sunset where we had the most romantic dinner of my life two years ago.

We're going to Costa Rica in October with my family, and we plan to take one night as "date night" so my parents can do their own thing and my brother and his girlfriend can do their own thing, and FI and I are going to drive the 30 minutes from the house we're all staying to visit that restaurant again. So I think that's a really great thing!  We can sit and reminisce about how far we've come and what we've been through in the 2.5 years since we were last there.  I'm very much looking forward to it!

ETA:  I always felt like it wasn't fair to impose too many guidelines.  In that case, why should he bother proposing at all?  All I asked was that it was just the two of us present so we could have some private time.

I totally agree with this! Really unless it comes up on the board (like this thread) I never think about how I would want BF to propose.

I don't think any "dream" i have will take away from the real proposal..because realistically i'll be estatic if he just up and asks me one day without really doing anything fancy. i think it's still fun to think of neat ways i'd enjoy being proposed to, or how i'd propose myself :)

I didn't have a dream proposal...I just wanted some kind of heartfelt speech.

FI far exceeded my expectations.  :)

Honestly I've never imagined a 'dream' proposal. I just sometimes wonder how BF would do it. Would he ask in front of family? Would he ask when it's just the two of us? I do think it would be the latter though. All I really want is for him to be down on one knee and say something wonderful.

I'm half and half on the "dream/fantasy/overthetop" proposals. I see some on videos and on websites occasionally and half the time it's just really cute. The other times I'm thinking to myself, "who needs this? This is just to brag about, or to tell to your friends or to keep up with the Joneses." Some people are very into the show. The pomp and circumstance. At that point I think it becomes less about the couple and spending their lives together and more about making sure everyone knows just how big and bad@ss the proposal was. I worry about those couples. It's the little things that keep the marriage going. Not the big Birthday/Christmas/Anniversary/Holiday gestures. It's that single flower on the counter for no reason. Not the giant bouquet at work for everyone to see. Especially if you've made it known that you expect  "surprise" flowers at work. It's a big show, and not a genuine gesture.

I used to have very big Tiffany dreams. And hell, seeing that little blue box would make me ecstatic! But honestly, now when I let my mind wander the thing that makes me smile most is just imagining him saying those words, asking me to marry him. Over breakfast, over coffee, while we're snuggling on the couch catching up on Psych (that show is seriously funny). Those are the types of "dream proposals" I think of.

Weirdly enough, I've discussed this with him because we had a friend propose in a really unusual way. I don't want a lot. We can't go back to where we first met or first kissed because both were in our high school. All I want is something he put thought into. The rose garden at the local park at sunset with a heartfelt speech and him down on one knee would be perfect though. He's just as much of a sap as me so I wouldn't put it past him.

My dream proposal was just having FI actually say the words "will you marry me?"  He knew the other proposal stories in my family and really, that's all he had to do to make it the best one yet.

He one-upped that by proposing on the beach in Hawaii.  It was better than I could have imagined, it was just me and FI, in a place that we love, and it was totally 'us'.  No big speech, no flashy set up, and a bit of inside humor.

I have no clue how BF will propose, and honestly i'm trying not to think about it. He is a very romantic and thoughtful guy, so I know he will do something sweet. We have both said we feel it should be a private moment. Although I think it takes a lot of courage for a guy to stand up and ask for your hand in front of family/friends, we are more private and it just wouldn't be our style. Otherwise, I leave it entirely up to him. He wants us to have a good story to tell when people ask how it happened...so I guess we'll see!

    I don't condone creating a fantasy about a proposal.

However, it would be nice if my family was there.  No biggie, we'd still be engaged if they weren't, and they're only a phone call away.
