i'm not much for shopping and the more stores i looked at i just kept getting even more indecisive, they were all cute; finally...i told evryone " i have two appointments this weekend and i'm pickin ONE!" i actually had tried on a dress and got that "WOW" and speechless feeling, of course it was more than i wanted to spend. so i tried to find it cheaper online, but they were all imitations and i didn't trust it... hell, after a while i didn't even remember how it looked on me and it didn't look as good on the model on the internet either! any way my point is, i realized i dont need "THE DRESS" i wanted a dress that my husband would turn around and say "WOW THAT'S MY WIFE!!!" like getting ready for hours for your first date. and really any dress you wear... you're husband will think you're beautifull, won't even notice the dress.. he'll only see you.  i bought a dress that was pretty and still comfortable enough to party the night a way! i mean, t's a celebration, i'm marrying the man of my dreams! IT IS JUST A DRESS
  • First of all, I LOVE this thread!!  Television and movies really do set you up for unrealistic expectations.  Not every bride will have the "wow" feeling

I bounced back and forth between a few dresses.  I think I tried on about 100 dresses over the course of 4 months, and I came back to one of the first dresses I tried on (that I didn't like at first) and ended up really liking it.  It made me feel beautiful. it was in my budget range and it was comfortable to wear... that's how I knew it was the right dress.

  • I went dress shopping with my mom. It was the third dress shop we had visited and I had already tried on numerous gowns.  When I put on "the one" my mom immediately starting crying which of course made me cry. I always trust mom and she had shown no emotion over any of the other dresses. It was one of the most special days we have had together. :)
  • I knew it was the one when I saw the shop.  They had wings in the window, (my bridesmaids are wearing wings in the wedding).  I took it as a sign as I had been trying for months to narrow it down and find that "one dress".  When the guy consultant gave me the dress, I had doubts, cause it was something I didn't want, until I put it on.  It fit like a glove (for a size 16 body at least) and I told my MOH and best friend to close their eyes and when I walked out, all 3 of us started tearing up...everything else I tried after, just couldn't hold a light to this dress.  My mom was pitching in for the dress so her opinion mattered.  I selected 3 dresses there and 3 at a nother shop, when we went back with her and my MOH, my mom selected the dress we teared up on.  So I had the wow, the signs and mom's approval.  Couldn't ask for a better way to choose a dress. • Alright, I believe I had a "wow" moment because when I went in to David's Bridal I had not intentions of looking at dresses. All I really wanted to do was to settle on colors and pick out Brides Maid dresses - I'm a year and a half out and I didn't think I was ready to go dress shopping but when I got there and was registered they had me look at dress books and pick out styles that I liked. I picked out a few and even had a favorite from the website. Come to find out my favorite was not is stock but I wasn't upset. My mom, grandma, and maid of honor were all there. I tried on the first one and I loved it - no I'm not in love with my dress I just love it. There weren't tears it was just perfect - I mean a perfect fit with minimal alterations. I tried on a few others but the first one was it. So to not take any chances, a year and a half to go, we bought it. I'm sure my weight is not going to change so drastically so Im not worried but I absolutely love that dress!!!

I first went to a few stores to try on some dresses my MOH almost cried when she saw me in a Morie Lee dress that fit me like a glove, but it was out of my budget.
I ordered my dress online, when i say it on the webpage it jumped right out at me. So hopefully ill get the "wow" feeling when it finelly gets here or when i try it on for the first time.

  • I tried on many dresses, both before and after I had found "the one".  I had a similar situation where the one I really liked and wanted was a bit over budget.  I looked around for 3 weeks after I found that dress, and tried countless others on.  The other ones looked nice on me and I thought they were pretty, but every time I envisioned myself walking down the aisle, all I could think about was that one I loved.  In the end, I figured that if I couldn't get it out of my head, that's the one I'm supposed to have.  I went back to that bridal shop, tried it on, and bought the one I'd originally loved.  My advice to you... If you can't get that other one out of your mind, and you compare all others to that, that's the one.  The only way I wouldn't get it would be if it's way far out of your budget.  Mine was only about 20% out of budget after taxes... I was also able to talk them down a little bit, so you might want to try that too.  Some bridal shops are more than willing to work with you.  Good luck!
  • The consultant at the second store I went to picked out all but one dress for me to try on.  One I was trying on again because I liked it, the others she picked.  I was stuck and thought I only wanted dresses from one designer, but she brought me things from all kinds of designers.  She stayed within my budget and when I first put on "the" dress the first thing I said was WOW and got a big smile on my face.  I wasn't sure about it and put it on a second time before I decided completely, but I knew it was it when I could envision my at my wedding in it, everyone I had with me said wow and that they loved it and my grandmother started to cry.  You just have to go with what you're looking for and get what you love and can envision you in on your wedding day.  Good luck!

  • I did not even see my dress before it was bought!!

My sister phoned me and told me she found my wedding dress. I felt quite confident in her judgement, as we went over hundreds of pictures and tick boxes of what I wanted. I was feeling pretty adventurous and told her to buy it on the spot - to her utter shock... I think she phoned me as a joke, and it really turned out to be my dress!

Of course she hardly had time to switch off her car when she arrived - I was all over her Laughing I tried it on, and it fit like a glove! And of course everybody that was present - myself, 2 sisters, brother in law, and later the butler, was in absolute awe!

The great thing though, is that is was R1500 (South African Rands) - that translates roughly to +/- US$150 (give or take). The bodice is beaded and it has a full tulle ballgown skirt.  It was (of course) bought at a chinese market, but I don't think anyone will ever know that. Plus, I've paid roughly 10% of the price that dress HIRE costs here....

I went dress shopping only one day. I went in with a specific dress from Maggie Sottero's destination collection in mine & it was just not the dress for me. Very pretty on the rack, but did not do me any good.  I tried on 30 dresses in 2 hours and found "THE ONE." It is the dress I was telling the owner of the boutique was suggesting I try on the whole time and when I put it on boy was she right.  I knew it was the dress when I went home that night and when meeting a friend for dinner found the perfect shoes! In my head, I knew that was the WOW I needed.
  • I just bought my dress three days ago, the second time I went shopping. I had tried on a strapless dress that day that looked great on me, but after wearing it for about 15 minutes, I still wasn't smiling. I put on another dress with straps, and started smiling. I didn't cry, but I knew it was just how I imagined my wedding dress. I smile every time I think about it, and while I didn't cry, I absolutely love it and can't wait to wear it on my wedding dress. Thankfully, the dress was in my budget too so I didn't have to worry about that.
