  Yes, I have heard of the peroxide and baking soda method. You can either make a mixture and soak in a bowl, or make a paste that sits directly on our nails. I plan on trying this because my nails are stained from red nail polish. A base coat should prevent future staining next time your nails are painted.

  The odd thing is that I don't wear dark colored nail polishes.  I always use a base coat & wear shear or pale skin toned colored polishes.  If it was a health issue - since your nails show that stuff, I guess it has passed since 1/2 of my nails are pink now (the new growth).  I just figured it was from this cheap nail hardening base coat that I was using.  Tx I will try the bakign soad/peroxide later this week - maybe Friday or Thursday at the earliest to see what happens.  If worse comes to work I will lightly buff them the day before the wedding so that I have less chance of breakage.

  Sometimes the base coat can stain too, if it's a cheap brand. Try the baking soda and peroxide treatment first. You can also try using a whitening toothpaste (if you already have some, otherwise skip it). If those don't work, hit up Sally's and talk to someone there because they have products specifically made to whiten nails. They aren't super expensive, about the cost of a tube of good whitening toothpaste (hence why I said to skip that if you don't already have some laying around). I'm not sure how well buffing them would work because the stain is usually deeper than can be buffed off, and especially since your nails are already thin you may end up worse off than you started. The product made for nails should work, but if it doesn't, I wouldn't bother with it. You can try having your manicurist use a slightly less sheer pink for your french manicure to hide the discoloration. I doubt anyone but you would notice anyway.

  I just remembered another method... Use teeth whitening strips cut into pieces small enough to fit your nail. Although, I would try the baking soda/peroxide first because those strips are expensive!

  I do have a teeth whitening kit (not the strips) where you squirt the whitening gel into a mouthpiece.  I will try the baking soda/peroxide first since it is cheaper & if that does not work, I will try the whitening kit I have.  Thanks for the great info.  I will give it a try later this week.

  Ok - it worked!!! I put the whitening paste for your teeth (it is a teeth whitening kit from Crest) on my nails for about 15 mins & then took the rough side of a sponge to rinse/lightly scrub my nails & they are white again....   So excited, they look so nice - heck one coat of sheer pink on my nails and they look nice - 2 coats will be perfect   Thanks for the advice- The Knot Girls are the best!!!

  Just for future reference... Always, always use a base coat no matter how light the nail polish is. A good brand is Creative its green colored but goes on clear. Nail polish can stain no matter how light the color is. Also, don't buff your nails it does nothing but weakens them.

  Tx oh I know I always use a base coat : I was using a nail strengthening one I think it is what caused my nails to yellow. I switched base polish the new growth was a normal pinky beige. So that other base is going in the garbage lol
