Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

How would you decorate this church?

Below are pictures of the church sanctuary where our ceremony will be held. Since we'll only be there for about 30 minutes, I don't want to spend TOO much money decorating it, but I want to do something. I plan on making moss intials to hang on the entrance doors, but what to do inside? I've attached a picture of some pew decor a friend did at the same church a few years ago(but she spent wayyyyyy more than I plan on spending on flowers). Would you do flowers? Pomanders? It is an April, late afternoon wedding. My dress is lacey. My girls will be wearing purple BM dresses("Smashing" purple from Dessy) and my general color scheme is purple and silver/dark gray.

Re: How would you decorate this church?

  • That's a beautiful sanctuary.  So my answer is to do little if anything.

Remember, you're looking at an empty sanctuary right now.  On your wedding day, the front will have lovely BM's in beautiful purple dresses and holding lovely bouquets.  There will be GM in tuxes/suits.  There will be an officiant in robes or a suit.  There will be a proud and beaming groom.  And there will be a radiant bride in the most beautiful dress.

Put a couple of floral arrangements, and IMO, you're done.  The church is decorated.

As for pew decorations, I'd just skip them altogether.  Once people are seated (as soon as they arrive) they won't be looking at pew decor.  Once the wedding begins, all of their attention will be focused on the front of the church.  And once the wedding's over, attention will be focused on the back of the church where the happy couple is standing.

I find pew decor, especially in such a pretty church, to be a completely unneccessary expense that will add little to nothing to your ceremony.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146

I would put some flowers in the alter area and leave the rest of the church bare.

  • This is a very nice sanctuary.  I would decorate the altar only. Since it will be late afternoon, hopefully you get some great sunlight thru those pretty windows

  • That's what I was thinking....something at the front. I have 7 BMs, so there'll be a crowd up there :) Thanks!
  • if you wanted some sort of pew decor, i wouldn't do all of them, and you certainly don't have to do flowers.  a friend's wedding i was just at decorated only the ends of the pews where family would sit.  it helped to set them apart in a special way and also gave a little "cheat sheet" to the ushers of exactly how far back they were to be seated!  you could easily just put some purple/silver/black ribbon or tool or whatever. or if you want to do all of them you could put a different color of ribbon, etc on the family's pews...but I personally think you don't need anything there unless you just really want something! there are LOADS of pictures on this website, just look through and see if anything catches your eye and then adjust it to fit what you like :)

maybe just a couple of flower arrangements on either side of your altar....small ones would be fine especially with such a big party!  (i am having 7 also!) :)
and yes that is a gorgeous sanctuary!  good luck with the rest of your planning!
