When to start

Hi everyone,
my fiance and I are not getting married until October of 2014, but I was wondering when is a good time to start budgeting for the honeymoon? I know rates change, but is it okay to meet with a travel agency this far in advance? Or should I not worry about it until next year? Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks
Molly

Re: When to start

  • You can start budgeting without knowing too many specifics this far in advance. It is way to early to meet with a travel agent for a fall 2014 wedding...there aren't even flights released for November 2012 yet for some airlines and some resorts aren't booking fully into 2013.

I would suggest waiting until 2014 to meet with a travel agent and do some reserach on your own to get an idea of costs. Keep in mind that in that time, places can close and new places can open.

  • It's way too early to even think about booking.  You can do your research and find out where you want to go and the average hotel prices however flights can be more expensive in 2014.  I wouldn't meet with anyone until October 2013.  We did book our flights for our July honeymoon this past september and I am glad we did b/c they are very expensive now.  So it can't hurt to book your flights as soon as they come out which is normally about 10 months out.

  • I would start saving now and not worry about specifics until 2014.  I'm pretty sure a travel agent couldn't help you now if you went.

  • Ditto pp's.  I wouldn't start planning yet, but I would start saving!  Then maybe a year out or so, based on how much money you have saved, you can start to determine what you can afford
  • You can always start saving now! I don't really see any harm in that!!  If you save too much you can always put it towards the wedding.  It is def too early to book but doing some research and getting a general idea won't hurt, it will help you figure out how much you need to save.
It all depends on where, what time of year, and how long you are going on your honeymoon for.
For my FI and I booked in November (June 10th wedding).  We are going to Santorini for 2 weeks in June.  This is the start of their busy season and the place we booked only has 7 rooms, also the whole two weeks thing made us want to book early.

We used booking.com, best of luck!

  • Definitely start saving as soon as you know you're planning a big trip. We opened up a separate savings account just for vacations. Most of our savings allowance goes to our other savings account, but we do put a little in our trip fund every month as well. Over time, it really adds up! Maybe aim to put $100/month into your trip account, and over the course of 2 years, you'll have a good deal saved up. If you can afford to save more, go for it.

A year out, I would probably start looking into trip specifics and see what you can afford. Depending where you're going, you could probably book a year out. I have never booked a trip further out than 7-8 months.

  • Save now! You can start researching now too. Just remember that travel agents don't make anything from working with you unless you book through them so be loyal to who helps you (unless they are not helpful at all, then quickly move on!). I def recommend a travel agent though because they have access to lower rates at resorts and perks. I have booked a lot of less expensive travel on my own, but for more expensive travel such as a honeymoon, get a travel agent to help. Mine is awesome, she hooked us up with a great deal, and then a free upgrade (worth $900!) on top of that. Her name is Dalia and even though she is based in Austin we we live, we never met her in person so I am sure she could help you too! dalianuernberger@tramex.com
