Can we talk about taxes?

Re: Can we talk about taxes?

  • Koda! That's what I'm running into right now. I have to fill out a form with the MSRS so that the new one (401(a)) will give me the info.  The info that I have to give MSRS to authorize the transfer. what the fuuck.

Keep in mind I DIDN'T CHANGE EMPLOYERS.  I just got promoted from an hourly to salary position. (And yes, the benefits change was that drastic. Worth significantly more than the actual raise I got.) I doubt I'm the first person do this.
  • Best part about having 2 babies in 1 year?  $2000 tax credit, baby!

Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • ok, so wtf? I'm still working on stuff. I entered all our income (two W2s) and it showed a federal refund of about $1500.  I entered all of our house stuff (all deductions- mortgage interest, PMI, points, etc.) and now it shows I OWE $900. By entering deductions, not income. I'm baffled.
  • Just run it all the way through (income, deductions, credits) and see what you end up with.  Try not to pay attention to the running tally as you go.

  • I am Tide. I'm done and it's still showing us owing money. lame.
  • I always use TaxActOnline.com. I've used them for many years to do mine, H's (when he was BF and FI), my ex's, his friend's, his GF's and my friend's. Its easy to follow and pretty much fill in the blank.

  • Steph, make sure you haven't selected to itemize even if your standard deduction is more than your itemization. That's the only reason I can see that you entering deductions would cause you to owe. If the standard is more than all your house stuff, then take the standard.

  • Itimized is actually about $13k vs standard of $11k and whatever. That's why I'm so confused. I think the jump from a refund to owing was actually from H's salary and the system was just delayed.  When it was all said and done, we owed $200 on fed and had a $120 refund on state. So owed $80 total.

I'm doing it on H&R now and it has us owing $60 on fed and a $120 refund on state, so a total of $60 refund.

If they're all using the same tax code, why the hell is it a different number? MAKES NO SENSE.
  • See if you can print out the actual forms it produces and compare the numbers.

  • My Dad does mine, but this will be the last time. He told me that once I am married, I am on my own! Haha

  • I always use Turbo tax.Make sure you check with your banking website to see if they will give you a discount with TurboTax. I use PNC and they gave discounted pricing when logging in thru their site.

I think with how many questions TurboTax asks you it would be hard to miss a deduction. But then again it's hard to say. FI used to go have his taxes done every year and H&R block missed something in his filing and he ended owing more money. That was annoying especially since he was paying to have them taken care of.

  • I usually do TurboTax, but I am going to get mine done this year because my second job doesn't take out taxes. H's should be pretty simple, so I will probably do his but get mine done. This year I have student loan interest to claim, so I hope I don't have to pay too much, but I set aside 1600 just in case.

Steph, I thought the student loan interest is a write off that actually works in your favor. No? Last year I didn't get to claim any, so my return was less than the year before when I was able to claim the full amount.

  • Yeah Denise.  But as a couple you can only claim $2500 in student loan interest.  We paid a little over $4k (ouch. Just in interest.)

[QUOTE]In related news. I always hate doing my taxes. It's just a painful reminder of how little I make and how much the government takes.
