I do not like wedding dresses? Help!

Hello! :)

I just got engaged two weeks ago, and I am new to The Knot. I have been looking at wedding dresses, and while I think they look beautiful on other people, I really, really hate the idea of wearing one. I am not interested in wearing a white dress, and I feel like I am too short to pull off a traditional dress that is long and has any volume. I think that I would feel like I was playing dress up or going to a prom. This pretty much rules out any dresses that are designed to be wedding dresses.

I am having a spring wedding, and it will be warm enough to wear something that is short. I like some of the J Crew bridesmaid dresses in light blues and greens, but there is not a J Crew bridal store anywhere near my home and I am hesitant to buy something I have not tried on. Does anyone have any store or style suggestions?  :)

The new Kennedy Blue line has dresses that are similar fabrics and styles as JCrew dresses.

They only have one light colour close to J Crew's though, which is called Mint:

If you live in the States, you can take advantage of their "find-try-buy" service.  You choose a dress or two to try on, they send it to you for $1 and then you decide if you like it or not.

  • :-) throw the idea of a traditional dress out the window and look at bridesmaid dresses (found in bridal shops but in many more styles/colors) and other formalwear shops. Department stores like Nordstrom have lots of options. Any formal dress (or really anything you want) can be your wedding outfit. I'm sure you'll be beautiful.

(I also didn't want white so I'm making my own pink dress)
  • I would recommend you go and TRY ON some wedding dresses just to see how you actually feel when you wear one.  There are tons of styles for every body type.  You don't need something big or poufy, there are lots of sleek, slim, sexy gowns.   Or simple and classic.   You'll only REALLY know how you feel in a wedding dress if you try them on.

If that't not for you, then there is NOTHING wrong with wearing whatever you want that makes you feel beautiful:-)   And there are a LOT of options out there!!1

  • You can simply order the JC dresses online to try on in your home.  If you don't like them, you can mail them back for a refund as long as you do not remove the tags and you are within their 60 day return policy.  The return postage fee is less than $10 I believe.
  • You kind of sound like me. I hated wearing big dresses because they felt like a costume, and not me. I found a very slim silhouette, and I didn't wear a veil because it didn't feel right on me. I'm basically just wearing a very nice, slim, white dress.

  • Congratulations on your engagement!  You definitely need not restrict yourself to wearing a traditional wedding gown on the big day.  Once you decide the time and setting for your ceremony, you'll be in a good position to begin thinking about/looking at dresses.

Consider your favorite places to shop for special occasion dresses and start there.  Keep your mind open ... short, tea or floor length?  Fabrication?  Style?  Color?  All of those options are open to you.  Have a great time as you begin planning!

I wore a floor length, dusty blue (dusk) dress, which I bought at Nordstrom.  It was sleeveless with a deep v-neck.  I paired it up with a pair of custom-made, snake skin pumps (white with floral print).  I really loved my look for our special day and enjoyed the freedom from traditional choices.

    Good luck creating yours!
  • Thank you, everyone! I am going to look for dresses in January, and this has given me a lot of helpful advice! :) Thanks for all the support!
  • i also love the dresses at bhldn.com  (the are returnable as well, and the reviews tend to be very specific so you can get a sense of whether they fit true to size etc).  lots of options in terms of colour, shape, length etc.

wear what you like!  i suspect your guests would be more surprised if you wore the traditional white dress anyways since it sounds like it's not your style.
