May be dumb question....what is a groom's cake?

So I have not been to a wedding with a groom's cake and have never heard of one before, but I seem to be seeing people talk about them all over this site. Is there a purpose to it or just something fun for the groom? Is it displayed with the regular cake? Thanks for enlightening me!

Re: May be dumb question....what is a groom's cake?

  • I've never seen one in real life and find the concept bizarre. I just don't get why the groom needs a special cake to represent his personal interests as opposed to the standard wedding cake. That said, there's nothing wrong with more cake Tongue Out
  • It's chocolate because chocolate in a wedding cake is bad luck (if you believe in superstition)  So they make this separate cake, to be like the grooms hobby, and make it chocolate.

Just because you saw it on Four Weddings, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • LOL actually it's a very old ENGLISH tradition that became popular in the south.

  • I'd never heard of it before TK -- I'd personalyl rather just include my FI in the planning so he feels like the whole wedding is his and not just one little cake, but like tenofcups said I've never said no to cake!

A lot of girls do include their FIs on the planning of everything and still actually decide to get a cake for their FIs.  It's okay to let him have something on that day too.  I recently went to a wedding where the bride designed the groom's cake and the groom designed the wedding cake.  It was very nice and both cakes were delicious.  Another girl I know had groom's cake made of where they met.
  • Thanks everyone! It sounds like fun, actually, and I'm sure he'd love it. We are designing the wedding cake together and a friend is making it, but maybe I can have a special cake made for him as a surprise? Plus, more cake is pretty awesome :)
