WWSBD? AKA- Shingles FAQ

I was just informed that FSIL has shingles.  We have several small children/pregnant women coming to the wedding.  You can't pass shingles on to someone who has had chicken pox, but you can pass it to someone who has not or isn't vaccinated.  Should I be worried about this?

Re: WWSBD? AKA- Shingles FAQ

  • Yes. It's insanely contagious.  I'd have her check with her doctor on whether or not she's still contagious.

But FFS, as an adult, you'd hope she would have the common sense on her own to skip out on the wedding.

Exactly what steph said. Does she plan on talking to her doctor?

YES! shingles are BAD news bears. My mom had it a few years ago and was quarentined for weeks. It is highly contagious and extremely painful.
  • To clarify- no one will get shingles, but they'll get chickenpox.  Not to be 'that' pregnant woman- but chickenpox can be really serious in pregnant women (like fatal the fetus serious.)  Family or not, I wouldn't want her around anyone, but especially not kids or pregnant women.
  • My mom has had repeated bouts of shingles, and she works in an eye doctor's office so she's around tons of people all day - she just steers clear of kids/pregnant women when she's having symptoms.

However, that's not to say it's safe - I really have no idea. It would probably be best for your FSIL to consult her doctor to determine what she should do. What a bummer, I hope everything works out okay!

Remember those people I work with who had singles and came into work as if everything was fine the entire time they had it? Some people are stupid, no offence brandi.
  • I wouldn't think you'd have to do anything and she'd have the common sense to discuss it with a doctor.

I know sometimes this is a stretch.

  • Her answer is that she has been taking medication and now they are scabs but I'm still worried about it. She doesn't seem to think this is an issue at all.

  • What Steph said.
Is this her first time with shingles? I would think she would know how contagious it is.

  • oh. Well from what I understand, once they're scabbed over it's not technically contagious. But still. ew. and the perception of the fact that she, you know, HAS SHINGLES would keep her from attending.
  • She should consult her doctor about exposure and contagion.  Both of my daughters have had shingles, and were not quarantined.  I would worry about being in close quarters with small children or pregnant women, though, if I had an active case of shingles.

    Um, yup!

Brandi- I wonder if her doctor has told her how long it is contagious?

Absolutely, I get where you're coming from. I should have been more clear - she takes as much time off of work as possible when they flare up, and she stays in her private office 90% of the time when she does have to return to work, away from patients. She's very, very careful about it - but it's also impossible for her to miss up to 3-4 weeks of work at a time, and she's had 3 flare-ups in the past year.

  • sorry, kroot, your mom still grosses me out, and I'd still be pissed. It's a medical office! and she works with eyes? ew. my skin is all itchy now.

shingles can be very serious if it gets in the eys too
  • Worry.
I've never had chicken pox and I would be super pissed to get them now!

Steph, I respect that. If it grosses you out any less, she's the office manager - no physical contact with patients, ever, and she would always stay home as long as possible. But yeah, I get why it would gross you out. Totally can't argue that.

  • Ok. That's a little better ;)

And Jackie, I figured that was legit.  But, even if it's not contagious anymore... there's still the perception.  Unless she can cover any sores/scabs.
  • I just decided to go ahead and text her and ask her if her Doctor cleared her to come. Hopefully she answers me and was cleared.  Thank you all for the info.  I'm glad I'm not crazy for being worried.

  • MY IN LAWS ARE INSANE.

She called her mom (FMIL) throwing a fit that I asked and FMIL called FI and yelled at him about how "kids get chicken pox all the time".  FFS people. I'm going to lose it.  That is not their decision to make for those children/people who would be exposed.

  • Tell her to go sell some chicken pox pops on ebay.  crazycakes.
  • Someone *coughjackiecough* correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Shingles was a reactivation of the chicken pox virus so actually you get shingles after you've had chickenpox.

So people who haven't had chicken pox can get chicken pox from exposure, and people that have can get shingles.  No?

Isnt it extremely bad for adults to get the chicken pox?

    Got it.

Steph, I meant how does it reactivate.
