How to mentioning missing military groomsman in program?

Wow that was a bit of an alliteration...

One of our groosmen is in the Navy, and his leave was recently denied so he will be unable to join us for our wedding.  We fully intend on still listing him in the program, but would like to include a note along the lines of "Cory is unable to join us today while serving our country", but I can't actually come up with a phrase I like.  I'm hoping for suggestions on how we can make this note so we can properly honor his friendship and commitment to his country.

Any thoughts?

  • List him in the program as Honorary Groomsman.

  • I'm planning on doing that, but I mean I would like to mention something about him being in the military and I don't know how to do that.  There will be questions from people, and I'd rather address it up front rather than have the whispers.
  • I don't think the whispers you mention will actually happen. I know I might wonder or speculate in my head on seeing the program, but I wouldn't say anything and I would quickly forget about it. I wouldn't put anything specific if he's not actually deployed.

    I would do something like:

Honorary Groomsman:   Petty Officer John Jones, USN (friend of groom, currently serving in the Persian Gulf)

I like this too! And I have to say that if there was no explanation I would wonder and probably whisper! You're right to want to explain especially since he is serving our country.
