Name change/legal question

My fiance is changing his last name to his aunt and uncles name (family who raised him after his mom died when he was 10). We are looking up information on what steps to take and one of the steps says to Publish a notice of your intention to change your name in two newspapers in the county in which you live or in nearby counties if there is are no newspapers in your county.

What would be the reasoning for doing this?

Hm... sounds like a sort of "posting of the banns" but I honestly don't know why that would be done. Are you using a lawyer for this?

In my county, it gets posted in the paper when you "apply" to change your name. Can you call your county and ask an actual person?

He actually just recently made the decision to do it so we were looking up a little information on what the processw would be like. He is contacting his lawyer on monday morning. I was just curious though.

It's to give notice. Once it's been published, your creditors and can see it.

It goes back to a time when we didn't have computers and use social security numbers for everything. That was how they kept people from just changing their name and avoiding the law.

If you can't find someone to serve them with a lawsuit, you can serve it by publication like that too.

Eh, it's an old English thing when people got married. They'd have to post about it in the papers to make sure that anyone who wanted to object for any reason, could. Or something like that.

My stepdad did this when he was changed his name from his biological father to his adopted father's name. It's just a technicality thing. We actually just found his two newspaper articles about a month ago. Good Luck to your FI.
