NWR: Modest dresses?

I often prefer wearing dresses and want to buy some more for work.  However, the dresses at our local malls tend to be, um, somewhat immodest for my tastes.

Do any of you know of a site where I might be able to buy more modest dresses at a reasonable price?  Jen Clothing is good but the selection is somewhat small... and sorting through the dresses at local department stores to find relatively modest ones is usually a frustrating and time-consuming endeavor.

I actually bought quite a few at JCPenney for under $50.  I tend to have good luck with Penney's.

I have trouble finding them too...what I have been doing is taking the dress to a fabric shop & matching a dominant color in the fabric & adding it where it's needed :) One dress I have I had to add 4 strips to the bottom to make it knee length, but it looks super cute. Of course, this only works if you can sew, but really, you only need a fairly straight line :) Good Luck!

I've had a lot of luck lately with Target's Merona line.   They are generally knee-length.  A lot of them are sleeveless, but easy to throw a cardigan over.

i usually have somewhat decent luck at Ann Taylor, although many of their dresses are sleeveless.  Talbots has nice stuff as well, but both of those stores are not cheap, although AT does have outlets here and there, and they usually have decent sales.

I don't know if this helps, but I was watching WE or the Style network and they layered a turtleneck UNDER a strapless dress. I think it was still on the short side, maybe just above knee length, but it covered all the necessary parts and was still stylish.

I second Target's Merona.  Also try Loft Ann Taylor, which is less expensive and more every day work than Ann Taylor.

I feel sometimes it's not only where I shop but also how I wear it.  For me, layering is really good, especially when I want to wear sleeveless I pair it with a cardigan or blazer with a cute belt.  For the legs in winter, I also like opaque tights in bold colors like marron or plum purple and not just classic black.

I also find that skirs and blouses are a good alternative to dresses. It is fairly easy to find modest skirts that can then be paired with modest blouses and can range from dressy to very casual, depending on fabric and styling. I'm also a huge, huge fan of cardigans!

I love Ann Taylor Loft and have gotten some great bargains searching them out. I also have good luck with department stores (I mostly shop at JC Penney and Dillard's) and find some great stuff at Target. I am a bargain hunter, so I'm always looking for a deal at any of those places.

    Thanks for all the suggestions!

I love Ann Taylor Loft, but they're always hit or miss on the affordability -- I try to wait till things go on sale, but by then frequently they don't have my size anymore.
As for Macy's, I struck out there last weekend.  Maybe I'll try going to the JC Penney a little farther away.

    Thanks ladies!
